And they are in!! Aviary extension completed :)

Post by Rox » Mon Nov 02, 2015 2:12 am

After a long 5 months, the birds were finally let loose into their new garden last weekend. At first they were very cautious about exploring but by this weekend, they were all over the place and feeling very at home.

I'm really glad that I let the garden have a chance to settle. Not only did the plants grow well over our mild winter but an entire eco-system of bugs have moved in. Free food for the waxbills :)

Rox

It looks wonderful Roxanne  . Are all those sections connected now, with the garden section in the middle ? That's what it looks like in the pictures.

Did you put all this together by yourself ?

I bet your birdies are just in heaven, with the new bug population to pick and choose from. Thinking you'll be having egg babies in your nests soon, with all those delectable treats.

Just got your extra pictures.
Lovely as usual !!! Those are some happy looking birds. I love the feather holding idea. I always just put them in, and end up with my house looking like a pillow exploded in it, lol.

lovezebs Thanks Elana! My mom (62) put up the wooden frame work and then I did all the planting and organizing inside. You need to figure out where to put perches to minimize poop on the plants :P I also had fun over the last few months collecting branches and making nests for the inside area.

The aviary's on the left of the picture are my holding aviary's for youngsters. The extension is just the planted side + the side which has now got the shade cloth on for a nesting area. Total length of the aviary is now 6m. It's great to sit between the two aviary's, you are surrounded by birds :D

Rox

It looks and sounds absolutely wonderful :-BD

Ok, I'm convinced, I'll be on the first plane out of here.... =)) prepare for a visit :-H .
We are at present experiencing a freezing fog, which will coat everything in a thin coating of ice. If this stays into the morning hours, it will make for treacherous driving conditions for the early morning commute . So as you can imagine, SA sounds pretty good right now.

Now that you mentioned it, I remember that it is your Mom, who does a lot of the carpentry work on your aviaries. I recall complimenting her work once before, and I shall do so again :-). And you as well, of course.

Funny that you enjoy puting together nests out of twigs and such. I also enjoy doing that, but for some reason, my feathered kids are not all that impressed with my talent (or lack thereof), as they usually pull my lovely creations apart.

Ah well, I guess it's bed time for me .
Have a wonderful day, and enjoy your birdies.

What a fabulous setup!! I'd never get any work done, I'd be sitting out there with a cup of coffee in the morning, and a glass of wine in the evening! Kudos to you and your mother for providing such a wonderful home for your flock.

Awesome Rox. Well worth the wait indeed. Looks fabulous. I'm sure the waxbill will love the privacy and extra space. Hope they fill that aviary with babies now. You only keep the waxbill in there with a few Gould?

I think I must come visit. So I can drool a bit.

monotwine

Make a quick stop on your way over there Monique, just a short cut through Canada, and pick me up. You bring the coffee and tea, I'll bring the cake, and cookies .... I guess we can share with Roxanne and her Mom, seeing as its their place.... Then we can all sit and drool together :))
