They are very cute in their little nest :D I have one pair sitting on eggs, and I haven't checked to see if any have hatched. Then I have another pair that I'm moving finally to their own cage to see if they breed. They're such sweet little birds!

Hi Stacy.

Yes they are real sweeties, I just wish that my two guys would be a little more calm. Not certain how or where they were bred, but obviously didn't have any or much friendly interaction with birds of the human kind.

What sort of nest did your guys build for their egg babies?

Elana have you ever considered sales? Now I want a pair as pair! Didn't really know it until I read this thread. lol. They sure are cute! Intresting too their nest building skills and it didn't know their song was soft. Great qualities. If ever I break my stick to one species rule they are at the top of the list. :D

Alas no, I am too honest to be in sales :YMSIGH: .
I tend to tell things as I see them, and most people, don't like to hear the truth.

Aside from that, I do happen to think that Owls, are extremely cute birds. Funny thing is, I didn't really consider them for a long time, and then I saw pictures of Smurf 's Owls, and then there they were at the Pet Shop..... and what can I say, they were just so..... well, I do believe it was fate :-).

I do think they make a sweet addiction to a community fligh.... like your flight....

I hope so too, but I can't see it happen until they settle down a bit.

Cross your fingers for me Roxanne, (or send me some birdie valium tablets to pump into their mealworms) :-D.

Maybe not quite as Socies, but they will snuggle in the nest. I watched them tonight, and they were kind off curled into each other, which was a real awww moment for me.

They do sit together often and lean into each other, and preen each other. Sometimes, they look like fat little Owly Snowman.

Not hard to see where they get their name especially in that last photo! I've never seen them in my area but you never know!

You keep showing those pictures and I might just show up wearing kevlar!

kyle
Hi Kyle. There are a few around, but no one I have spoken to have had success keeping them. They die in the first year. Ponytail Joe stopped selling them even before the bird flu and his decision to cut back on finches.

Petland (Freemont Center, PoCo) brought a couple in - one was a fawn - but that was last fall - they wanted $150 each. Do you know Jacob in Langley - he did breed them. $55 each four years ago. Not sure if he still breeds them. Owls were what started me into finches. The longest I had one was 14 months. I stopped after the first two because I heard too many sad stories.

Elana - I hope you have much better luck. I think the ones around here might have become in breed or who knows??? If all my new birds settle in nicely and I find some more big cages or build an aviary I might try them again. Do you know if yours came from back East?

Good morning Mary and Kyle

A bit of a shocker to hear that Owls in your area have been dying off. I've never beared of them being fragile or short lived.

As for the kevlar Mary, love tipped bullets, can penetrate any body armour :-D.

I'm using the same kind of plastic nest box that I use with my gouldians, the Leonardo Plastic Nest Box-Half Moon Opening from glamorous gouldians. I think the nesting material I use is from there also...a Coconut, Sisal, Jute and Cotton Fiber Mix. I put some in the nest for them, then laid some on the bottom of the cage, and they put the rest in themselves. They seem happy with the nesting material and nest. Mine aren't calm either...when I walk towards them and my parrot finches, they fly around like crazy until I walk away.
