lost baby

Post by mohum » Thu Nov 05, 2015 4:41 am

I am devastated because my birds got spooked while I was feeding them and my favourite fledgling shot out of a gap in the slightly open flap. They are outdoors so I have left food, nests and a cage out in case she returns. I am so annoyed because it was entirely preventable. They usually wait nicely on the far side until I have finished. It is not practicable to add an anti room but I may put a curtain over.

We have lost 1 adults and a fledgling because my stepdad did the wrong things when entering and leaving the aviary. When we reposition our current aviary and build our extension aviary, we are putting in an anti-chamber to prevent this from happening again.

Then again, it was purely my fault that we lost our charcoal cock as I was transferring him to the breeding box I made so he could enjoy a bit of quiet time with our new charcoal hen.

And the new charcoal cock is taking his damned time getting to know the hen.

Our Finches and our poodle supply me with an never ending amount of therapy for my stress related depression. Sitting there, throwing the ball for the dog while watching the finches is the best thing ever.

So sorry you lost the fledgling. Unfortunately, without a safety door, there is always the chance that a bird will get out when they are outdoors.

Sorry about your baby.
Sometimes they will stay in close proximity to their family members, who will call to them.

I would have a long handled net ready, just in case.
