Elana,

I think they're a write off too, especially if they have to be kept at the temps Debbie said. It's just so frustrating ~X( I'll give the blue hen one more shot for this breeding season.

I can't imagine having to explain that to young elementary students, especially seeing it first hand at a zoo! What did you do?

Debbie

Thanks so much for your info...I think the eggs are probably done for...I just got home, and it's obvious the societies are not interested in the nest at all. I guess it was worth a shot :YMSIGH: I might wait a couple more days and then candle again to see if anything is forming.

Sorry it didn't work out for you but it's probably for the best. Handfeeding isn't all that fun. ;)

You are probably right. But when I first candled the abandoned eggs I noticed the eggs that didnt develop had a splotch (no circle or defined spot) or just simply a yellow yolk., and the eggs that did develop had a defined dot with a circle around it.

I marked them with numbers to be sure. And the 4 that developed had a bullseye for sure. (eventhough we broke two of them grrr).

I wish there was a picture floating out in the ether that showed the perfect spot with the round circle around it we saw in the fertile eggs.

I was actually able to get my societies to start working on a nest, and I put fake eggs in to get them to sit, and they did :D So now, I'm gonna see if the blue hen will lay one last clutch, and swap them out with the fake eggs in the society nest.....third times a charm :-SS

I hope so! I've already noticed the yellow and blue gouldian pair have started going back into their nest, so hopefully they're laying more eggs!

Last night my son discovered five eggs in the yellow and blue gouldian pair's nest while he was changing their food  I knew the male had been sitting in the nest off and on, but I hadn't seen the female sitting at all. I'm not even sure if she's finished laying eggs at this point, but not wanting to take chances, I went ahead and pulled out the eggs in the society finches nest, and replaced them with the gouldian eggs. I held my breath to see if the societies would sit, and four were in the nest within five minutes, sitting comfortably :-BD Now I just have to wait and see if any of them will hatch!

Did you put the society eggs under the goulds so you could see if they would follow through with raising a clutch?

It's funny you mentioned that, because I had actually planned on doing just that, and then I broke both of the society eggs when I pulled the society nest out :( It was kind of hung up on the cage, and when I lifted it off the cage bar, it popped up really hard. I don't think the blue hen is done laying eggs...her tail kind of keeps bobbing up and down, which is what it did with the last two clutches, and then when she stopped laying eggs, it was normal. Maybe she'll lay one or two more, and I'll leave those in there.

If it works out, I'll definitely take pictures and post them! I checked my other pair last night, the gouldian pair who tried to raise the first clutch from the blue and yellow pair, and they have two eggs. I'm not sure how long they've had them, but they sit pretty regularly. I'm so hoping they'll hatch!
