Interesting Update On My New Pearl-Headed Silverbills

Post by lovezebs » Thu Nov 19, 2015 9:21 pm

Hello Friendly Finchers....

As some of you may recall, I ended up getting two Pearl headed African Silverbills, who were both singing and rumoured to be two boys.

These were initially advertised on kijiji, as a pair, bought by a fellow bird club member, who said they were both males, because both were singing. Because they were two males, he really didn't want them, and I ended up getting these two handsome boys, who are presently in quarantine, and doing very well.

They are doing so well in fact, that they are mating every time I look at them, and building a nest in their seed dish.....

Unfortunately, until one of them lays an egg, you won't know if they are a true pair. Same sex pairing does take place and the more dominant male would take the 'lead role'. I had 2 male blue-caps build a nest together...

Holding thumbs that you do have a true pair!!

Let me guess as soon as the kids where settled you laid out one of those enormous salads, the ones that make me DROOL everytime I see a picture of them.

They feasted like royalty and then you wonder why they get frisky. :YMPARTY: Heehee

Shrug , I honestly don't know Roxanne. I am altogether unfamiliar with this species.

I will definitely check the seed cup today, to see if there are any results to their wild desplays of er.... affection ;-).

:-) Although I have offered some greens, ( their quarantine cage doesn't really have a lot of room for a large salad ) they haven't shown much interest so far, probably not used to too many variations in their diet (which I often find with adult birds that come into my home). This will change, once they see some of the other kids going at a salad tray like wild hyenas in a supermarket meat department.

As to getting frisky...... they are most definitely FRISKY !

That would be incredible if they turned out to be an actual true pair and not two males :D

I would laugh, but you know, if they are two boys, that's fine too. Only time will tell, I guess :-).

Shameless little things! Naughty-naughty! I'd make the quarentine cage into an isolated breeding cage and get the show on the road!

Better than her dropping the eggs on the cage floor. You might get a crash course in "All Things Silverbills".

You know you LOVE it......admit! \:D/

The quarantine cage is too small for much of anything really. The kids will be moving to more spacious accommodations shortly.

Still don't know if we have a boy and a girl, but we shall see :-).

Considering different options here.
It would appear, that I might need another flight at some point here, but where to put it..... #-o
