Definitely 'well fed', compared to where they were a couple of days ago :-). Did you see their pictures before the parents decided to stuff them like sausages ?

I did - and it must be such a HUGE relief to you! I'm in that place right now of watching carefully to make sure my little ones are being fed well too. Awesome to see your plump little babes though haha . . . gives me lots of hope!!! And they're just soooo cute :)

BABY UPDATE !

Little guys were banded today, with little purple rings, so I'll know who belongs to whom.

A little concerned about one of them who appears to be somewhat splay legged. I hope it corrects itself.

You will note, that baby # 3, deposited a gift In my hand, just as I snapped his picture (and was trying to escape from the scene of the crime).

Thankyou.
Definitely no blue babies in this little bunch.
What do you think of the legs on the one bumpkin?

Could be splayed legs, might want to tie them together.

So it's not just me being paranoid. Poor guy does look like he's doing the splits, doesn't he?

Darn it, last time I tried this procedure with a baby Canary, I ended up losing him......he tipped over on his side in the nest, and the other chicks and Mom suffocated him over night.

Going to have to figure something out.......

When you pick him up does his legs go straight or are they stuck out to the side even when there is no pressure on them?
What type of nesting material are they using? If it's too slick they can't get their legs under them and splayed legs happen more often.

You could try tying his ankles together and propping him up against something. When I handfeed I use a little stuffed toy to put in with them. You can usually set them between 2 limbs so they are kinda wedged in.

So big so fast. The weeks fly by! <3

debbie276

That is an interesting bit of info for birds with splayed legs. Do you happen to have a picture of the correct way to do the procedure? Never know when this could pop up on any of our chicks.

Here's a link using foam for support on a larger bird. I'm sure it could be done on smaller ones.

A link using tape

When I had to treat for splayed legs I just used string like we used to with chickens etc. but I love this idea and will use it if I ever need to again.

That is awesome thankyou! I will save these links in my favorites for quick reference! :)

Beleive it or not, when I was a toddler I had a turned-in leg. That "hobble" method is very much how my shoes where fashioned to correct it. I had to learn to walk with a pair of shoes that had a bar that connected between the two shoes. So I learned to walk first in a zig-zag pattern. And my legs are perfectly straight still today.

Wow, neat that it works on birds almost the same way.
