BABY UPDATE:

Took babies out today and checked them out, with Pim and BB, watching over us.

Well, I made those babies march (I know I'm a nut). I had them on some crumpled up paper towel, and they had to march, to reach the cave of my hand.

All of them can walk, but their legs do slide outwards a bit. They can however bring their legs under their bodies, with a bit of counter resistance (my finger). I had them climb over my fingers, offering miniscule bits of mashed egg as a reward. (How can you tell I'm used to dogs  )

After around 10 minutes, they were ready for a nap. I crumpled up some more paper and put it in the nest, along with some spray millet, to give them something to climb over, and put them back in.

BB, went right in to check on her little sausages and stuff their little fat faces some more. We'll do this at least once a day, and see how it goes.

Gouldian Babies Exercise Time

I placed them on a piece of towling today, so that they could get some grip.
Still concerned about the two bigger babies legs splaying outward, especially the biggest one's right leg.
I'm working with them to keep their legs folded under them, with some limited success (I think). When holding them in my hand, they seem to be capable of pulling their legs in (with a little help).

I'm cautiously optimistic. Please keep fingers crossed for these little ones.

Reading up on splay legs, I came across the possibility, of malnutrition....... I wonder if the fact that both young parents were not feeding enough initially, could be a factor in this problem with these two older chicks. The youngest one, who began to get more food at a slightly younger age, does not appear to be affected by this issue.

He looks a bit stronger than he did yesterday. I really hope the walk therapy helps. Seems mom & dad aren't concerned at all. They just look inquisitive.

"Whatcha doing big giant?"

Boys those babies are well fed!

Kelly

I just buy perler beas rings, cut them into halves or even threes. I just use them for colour ID , to know which babies belong to which parents. You can get them at any hobby shop cheep-cheap.

Pim and BB are pretty, thank you.

My house 'beautiful'.... now that gave me a much needed chuckle. My house looks like a zoo exploded in it :-D most of the time (and that's on the good days =)) ).

Most times splayed legs are because the nest is too slippery and they can't get their legs under neath them

Babs

My bird parents never seem to mind my borrowing their babies for a while. I think these guys were more worried about the camera taking their pictures, than they were about me and the kids.

Regarding these kids....
This is not a matter of strength, they are all strong and getting their birdie muscles, this has to do with the upper joints in the legs from what I can see. They basically have to be retrained Into the right position.

I have tried to hobble in the past (with disastrous consequences, the splay legged baby Canary tipped over in the nest and was at upon in the night and suffocated).

You should see them racing over for a bit of hard boiled egg, lol. I've never seen anything like it in my life before. They're crawling over each other in their hurry. It's like Bubba and his cronies, on Black Friday morning at the Gun Shop. You'd swear these chickies have never seen food before (and I mean you can tell how starved they are, eh?)

BABY UPDATE

The happy trio are growing by leaps and bounds. Happily mooching some bits of hard boiled eggs, and quite content to sit in my hand (and leave a poopy present behind).
I think legs are getting a bit better, fingers crossed.

"It's like Bubba and his cronies, on Black Friday morning at the Gun Shop. " :))

You better get outta the way and back into a corner woman, or you'll have hoofprints on your forehead!

The babies look fantastic to me. Very much improved! A little PE and a few laps around the block seems to have done the trick ;)
