Eggs!

Post by dunker817 » Sun Dec 20, 2015 9:27 pm

A couple of months back I posted about my Gouldian's being frisky watching their mating rituals. Well tonight I was cleaning the bird room and found two eggs! They had been laid next to the base board under the parrot stand. I'm not sure if they were fertile or not. I might have a hen randomly laying eggs. My sister's conure does that without a male. Which species of finch lays light gray-blue eggs? Or could it be my canaries?

And a note on wild finches. My gold finches from the north arrived today. They were at my feeders this morning. They arrived two months later than normal. I guess it's been warm where they come from. Gold finches are one of my all time favorite birds so I am very happy they have returned to their winter home. I've also got a flock of juncos that come every year and they have been here a couple of weeks now.

The canaries are constantly carrying paper around the bird room and keep trying to build a nest in the silk plant. Tonight I noticed the cordon bleus were behaving oddly. The male kept offering the female a piece of paper and was jumping very fast, like a vibration almost, on the perch.

When Cordon Bleus are courting, they will sing while dancing and holding a piece of nesting material in their beak. Females can also do the same courting ritual. It is funny you should mention almost a vibration. There was an article not too long ago where someone filmed Cordon Bleus doing their courtship dance, and when viewed in slow motion, it revealed that they actually do a tap dance. It is quite impressive!
