Brat-Ricco, video- mean gouldian female...whipped male.

Post by Babs _Owner » Thu Dec 31, 2015 9:43 pm

So, we set up another nest to let Brat & Ricco have another try at raising a clutch. She has laid 3 eggs.

THIS is the nightly ritual, with or without a nest, she will call him foul names until the lights are out. Then and only THEN is he allowed in the nest, or (if there is no nest) beside her on a branch.

When I put the camera to the back of ther nest she is getting broody on.......you can hear hissing and her regular nightly rant all aimed at poor Ricco (when I place the camera outside the nestbox).

He just wants to come be with her. But alas, another night that he can only hop-in when the lights are out.

Bossy Brat and whipped Ricco. What will I do with you two......sigh ;)

Those two are definitely not what I would call a love match.
She does not sound welcoming at all, and he is sounding stressed and nervous.

In the next breeding season, (personally) I would place your unrelated adults in a flight together, and allow the girls to choose their own partners. They may still end up as a pair together ( there's no accounting for taste) but at least there will be choices available.

Once you see the couples pairing up, you can move them into their respective breeding cages.

Did you see the post I made about one of her offspring? One of her baby blues does the same thing she does (and they were raised by the societies). It just rants for no reason at all. I am starting to think her mean little attitude is genetic.

At least this time she is sitting tight on those eggs. That has surprised me. I'm curious to see if she will raise this clutch properly.

During the day they are alternating sitting with no protest from Brat and no obvious stress from Ricco. Its only at this odd time......when Brat knows lights are going out that she unleashes her verbal smack-down on him.

But I figured you'd get a kick out of seeing first hand. I wasn't pullin' your leg. My little Ricco......I've trapped him with Miss Cranky Pants. :-S

That's interesting, especially the fact that one of her youngsters is doing the same cranky behaviour.

What happens, if you change the lighting routine?

I hope she stays on her eggs this time around, and raises her own chicks. Maybe being a mother will mellow her down some.

Good observation. We actually finally gave her a nestbox so she would get off his back.

Now she yammers from inside the nestbox. Can you imagine how bad she was when she was all up in his face every night on the same perch?

Starting @ the .18-.23 second mark you can see he is getting ready to dive into the fake foliage. I still have to stifle a giggle.

She has never pecked him, attacked him in any way. She just wont shuddap in the evenings %-(

I'll hope next year we can find a fiesty redhead for her. Parrot finches you say, eh? heh heh heh.

Yeah we did try the lighting routine switch. We changed it to Brat's side going out befor Bri's side of the room. It completely completely unnerved Bri & Audy, so we had to put the timers back on the original cycle.
