puffy finch

i think my finch might have got chilled, its not cold in this room.the male has not looked right the past couple of days , puffed up , hes eating fine.his mate and the widow red eye finch were cuddled up to him on the perch preening him or pecking at him.i moved him into a warmer room with more sunshine to warm him up.Hes only a young star male this has happenned before, could it be hes stressed because i took the nest out and now he has nothing to do?

He could be sick and is just now showing the signs. If he is puffed up, he needs to be warmed. Do you have a light or lamp you could put over his cage? Were the other two finches preening him or pecking at hime?
I would seperate him, give him some sort of NV powder or Thrive. Do you have either of these? Also keep him as warm as possible.

Donna made good recommendations - separate him to a smaller cage, give him extra warmth / heat lamp, and provide him with spray millet to ensure he's eating (in addition to his regular food & water).

thank you so much for the advice he's looking better now i have warmed him up, strange this has happenned before when i first got him, my rooms are not cold but he seems to feel the cold anyway.i also covered the cage. and moved his cage where there was some sun on it during the day. I was curious what is thrive ? is it a antibiotic?Thanks again for the advice im new to the forum

Thrive is a great thing to have on hand if you ever have a bird to get sick etc....

I don't have Thrive but I do have and use Guardian Angel when a bird gets unexpectedly ill. Probably the same type of thing.

A birdstore owner emailed me about using baby pedialyte you can buy from drugstore you put a little in the birds drinking water it also gives them elecrolytes when their not well, has anyone heard of this?

I also read that you can give them human baby pedialyte. I forget where I read it, obviously on one of the many finch info sights.

Also, where do you get Guardian angel from?

Thank you B camp for sending me the finch site it has so much info, i have ordered bugs from healthy bird in ontario. I was talking to fairest finches and what a nice lady, i have ordered some supplies from her also. Oh by the way male finch is feeling so much better after he warmed up.They have stopped breeding now i will wait awhile till i put the nest back in.The only problem i have is that i dont know when the right time will be to put it back in.

Hi Christine,

Don't you just love the internet?! I get a lot of my bird supplies that way, too. Bugs by Orlux, canned mealworms, even nesting material (coco fibers), liquid calcium. So many things that are hard to find in the local pet stores. I'm going to order that Guardian Angel as well. So far I've been lucky, but sounds like a good product to have on hand.

And free samples from Goldenfeast! Mine should be coming early next week. Can't wait to see how they like it.

I think it would be a good idea to give your star a little longer to build up his strength after an illness. I'd wait at least a couple of weeks. Maybe others can suggest a good amount of time to recouperate a sick bird. But to me it seems too soon to consider breeding. Just my opinion though, others may differ.
