Is my male gouldian paralyzed? is there anything I can do?
hello everyone ")
One of my gouldian males appears to be paralyzed in the legs or sort of paralyzed. A while back ago he started to become very clumsy loosing his balance. many times he wasnt able to hold on to the perch and fall off of it. some nights while he slept he would fall off
the perch and sleep on the cage floor, then it was happening every night. Sadly he does not use any of the perches at all anymore, he can fly just fine but cannot hold on to the perches. Since he stays at the bottom of the cage all day I place a food tray in the middle of a small towel so that his legs aren't leaning on the bars all day long but after he is done eating and drinking he gets off of it, I guess the
bars dont bother his legs. when its time for bed I take him out of the cage and put him in one of my plants. I made a little bed out of horse hair and hid it in the plant so that he can feel safe at night. so far he sleeps there with no problem. I dont know if he is completely paralyzed in the legs because he does kind of hop around when he can just for a very very short distance with th help of flapping his wings and when i pick him up he does moves his legs and open his feet but not all the time. He eats and drinks with no problem. If any one can help me with this I would greatly appreciate it and if it helps i can make a small video on him and post it on youtube, just let me know.. Another question is what do I do with unwanted birds? I have 2 male white doves that are kept in a different cage and are very loud when they sing. I love them so much and it does not bother me but my dad is sick of their sining and im afraid he will let them go when the weather warms up because he has brought it up a few times. I dont want that to happen because they are pets and wont ever make it in the wild. Is there a place I can take them? HELPPPPPPP ME PLEASE

I can't begin to guess what could be wrong with your poor Gouldian boy - a video just might help. I love the sounds of the bed you made for him in the plant.
Re the doves - you can try to rehome them in the Marketplace on this forum. Don't know if anyone is close to you or willing to take them in but it's worth a shot. Or you can list them on Craig's List or Kijiji for your area.

How is your gouldian's breathing, is it abnormal in any way?
Your gouldian sounds like you are giving it tender loving care, it might have a spinal injury from a fall that might have effected the nerves that control his ability to stand and hold onto a perch.
You are doing a good job makong him comfortable. I'll go through some information and see if we can find out anything else you might be able to do for him.

sorry to hear about your gould...
the wonderful care you're giving him at least means he'll stay comfortable.
As for your doves, remind your dad that they will die if he lets them go, it's an awful thing to do. If you can't find anyone to take them, look for a local animal shelter or bird rescue group. craigslist is definitely a great way to rehome them too.
wish you best of luck with your birds!

They can have strokes just like any animal that may cause these symptoms. It could be caused from a head injury. It could be the begginning if Twirling syndrome. It could be a balance problem due to an ear infection. Could be liver failure. Could be so many things.
I had one act the same way ... he ate, chirped, pooped normal...yet acted like yours. He also had a twitch like a musle spasm/contration of his right foot. His eye also had the same rhytmic twitch. He was the picture of health feeding chicks one day... then found him on the cage floor like that the next day. He passed away on the third night. I assume he had a stroke or a serious head injury. The hen finished raising the chicks by herself and they all remain healthy to this day.... so it obviously wasn't something of a contagioous nature.
Here is a link to that story (the ilness towards the end)

Spinal cord damage or some sort of degenerative nerve problem was what came to mind when I watched the video. Poor wee thing. You are taking such good care of him though! He's a lucky birdie to have you.
