Brown House snake

A friend had this experience where a Brown House snake caught a Gouldian finch in his aviary.

They obviously not only eat mice and rats.

Thank goodness, that's one thing we don't have to worry about over here.

How did the snake get into the aviary? AND, how did he get it outa there?

Quite amazing that he caught that snake in the process of swallowing the finch. The problem with snakes is that they can get through quite small openings, but then they can open their jaws wide enough to swallow much larger prey. That snake doesn't look that big--long, but not big.

A snake once got through the somewhat soft bars of one of those economy 30x18x36 cages and ate 3 juvenile Star finches. He was then so big that he could not get out of the cage. I found him curled up in a plastic plant, sleeping off his big meal.

snakes are opportunistic feeders...happened to me once with a local snake, and it ended up as my pet for a couple of years.

This brought back some awful memories I had a similar experience with my son's pet snake in one of our indoor cages. He was hungry and did what he had to do....now we make sure he's always FULL

Ohh thats right Stacie, the corn snake. I remember that. That shook you up a bit that day!

That would have been that snakes last meal. I'd have got my husband to come and kill it before it was finished eating. It will be back for more. They can fatten themselves which I think is so CREEPY.

I used to raise pigeons, in a coop near an old tobacco barn. Sometimes a snake would show up and wreak havoc--they can slip into almost any cage.

A friend from Vietnam told me to get some geese, and they would keep the snakes away. I did get a few geese (that is its own story) that roamed free around the barn and coop area. I never did see a snake around there again.

Shame, the poor snake was just hungry. I have a soft spot for these guys, as they make awesome pets and are very placid constrictors. Growing up I had a female called Hermione

Oh yes...we make sure he's fed plenty of frozen mice now so he won't be looking for other food sources

I've never had a problem with a snake getting into my aviary, but last fall a small mouse made it through the 1x1 cm aviary wire. He ate two of my three strawberry finch eggs and then was too fat to get back out through the wire. I caught him in my bird net and 'donated' him to my terriers. Sorry guy, but I had to draw the line.
