My kids, are usually not interested in toys and mirrors (other than the Budgies).

Initially, I tried all sorts of stuff in the flights, but they would just poop on these items (I took the hint ;-)). They are usually busy interacting with one another, foraging, etc. The swings, fake plants, and the wild grasses, are what these guys are into. In the Summer, they love apple tree branches with the leaves on, which offer hours of intertainment, and leaves all over my floor :-).

I thought of offering Max a mirror, because he might have to be alone for quite sometime (until he heals enough to have a companion).

A Max Update...

Max is doing better and better , although I think his dead leg is starting to be more of a hinderance than an asset. Difficult decision ahead with that.

I have given him a little mirror for something to keep him occupied. He is staring at himself and trying to cuddle up to it. Then he gets frustrated and pecks it. He probably thinks to himself, what kind of a flat, cold bird is this :-L

Here is our boy...

Elana Debbyloo

oh my BLESS HIS LITTLE HEART he is such a cutie. Poor little fella. At least it's company. The pics last week looked like part of the leg was drying up but the higher up area looked improved like it was getting better color. He is a lovely color what kind of zebra is he?

My new birdies from Debbyloo are voracious eaters. I am going to make some of her recipes. It is fun to see them EAT. My birds just like their mirrors and swings. Even the new ones like to look a bit. Must be in the air over here.

As far as I know, he's a CFW (Chestnut Flanked White).
He and Micky, were rescues from our Humane Society.

The bottom part of his leg (I think) is a write off. He tucks it under himself a lot of the time.

We'll see what it does in time. If I see that it's bothering him and catching on things, I might amputate it. If it proves to be truly dead, then there should be no pain or bleeding, but again there is time, and we shall see.

I noticed today, that he's starting to grow little pin feathers on his his poor little wing nub :-). He tries to use his wing, but of course he can't. Poor Max, his flying days are over :-(.

Elana

your right he shouldn't feel it but the trick will be to really know.
If it is dead he would be better off without it. I wondered if any feathers would come back but since he lost the bones it really won't make much difference. He is an amazing little survivor of a bird and just beautiful. I'll have to keep that type in mind....with a little crested hair do on top ;)

continuing to hope all the best for Max.

Its amazing to me that he's not puffed up, shivering or anything.

He's just shrugging it of like "No wing, no leg, who cares....I have veggies and food !"

He's digging that mirror a lot!

He says, I'm a ZEBRA FINCH, I'm tough!!!

Regarding the mirror, lol.
Sometimes he tries to snuggle up to it, other times he attacks it.

Here is our Max, in his Physio cage.

I wanted to assess as to whether he can handle some low perches. I don't want his muscles to atrophy all together, so I figure he needs a bit of exercise, even if it's hopping around a slightly bigger area . So far it's a no go. He did however hop on top of a flat piece of wood that I put in there for him, to get access to the spray millet (so that's a start).

He keeps looking upwards, and made a few futile attemps at flying, poor kid. He just fell down , and looked confused. I imagine he can't figure out why all of a sudden something that has come so naturally in the past, is suddenly not possible.
