Saving A Juvie From A Water Grave

Post by lovezebs » Sat Jan 23, 2016 7:38 pm

Hello Fellow Finchers

Well, I got to play Lifeguard today :-) Bay Watch, here I come.

One of my Gouldian juvies (from Pim and BB's last clutch), got himself into trouble.

Putting their extra large tub into the flight, I went about washing their dishes, drying, chopping veggies, and so on, while everyone was happily splashing away. I don't know exactly what made me take a look at the window flight, but look I did. I noticed a lone juvie, sitting in the warm water. Then the Parrot Finch girls joined him, and some major splashing began. I went back to my birdly chores, but had an uneasy feeling.

Glancing back at the window flight, there he was, the same little juvie, still sitting in the tub, looking extremely wet and bedraggled.

Walking over to the flight, I noticed that his wings were down, hanging in the water. He gave me a desperate look, trying to fly out of the tub, but falling back in, face hitting the water.

I reached inside, scooping up this poor soaked little thing, looking more like a wet mouse than a bird. I placed him on the flight floor, and proceeded to sit down and watch him.

Five minutes passed, still sitting in the same spot, soaked wings hanging down, eyes closed. Then the shivering started.

Grabbing him again, I wrapped him in some paper towel , to soak up most of the water out of his feathers. The shivering however continued, even though my kitchen is at a constant 20-23C degrees .

What to do?

Then I looked at my little space heater/fan. May as well, I thought.
Holding baby in my cupped hands, I held him right infront of the heater.

Slowly the shivering subsided a bit and Mouse opened his eyes.
Unfurling his little wings, I rubbed the wet feathers infront of the blowing warm air. I did the same with his tail, and with his belly feathers.

Baby Mouse, started to move in my hands, showing some signs of life. I rubbed, and gently seperated the feathers, so that they could dry better, and Baby Mouse, attempted to fly out of my hands.

I placed him back in the flight.

Last I saw, he was munching on some greens, his feathers smooth and tidy once more.

I'm so glad that I was home, as I have a feeling that had I not been, I would have come back to a floater.

I know when he opened his hypothermia eyeballs you were so relieved. Good thing you trusted that intuition of your's O:-)

Now because of that I am going to lower the bath water level in Brat's Juvie cage!! Thanks for the heads up my dear friend.

The water wasn't all that deep. I think he just got too wet, with all the others splashing water all over him, and was just sitting in the water far too long, too wet to be able to get out of there . Luckily, I always offer warm water during the cold months.

I still lowered the bath water (now Im paranoid)!! They can still splash about, but they are in the "kiddie pool" for the time being.

This is how we learn, from each other. :-BD

So happy you noticed in time. I agree with you that he probably just got too drenched from the other birds and couldn't fly out of the bath. Great save to hold him in front of the heater! =D>
