Gray Singing Finches

Hi everyone,

I picked up these two finches in a trade for a canary.
The gal I got them from, ordered them as a pair but now thinks they are two males?
They were together in a cage and they beat the snot out of each other.
That's why they are plucked so badly!
I have separated and put plastic rings on their legs so I know who is who in the pictures.

What do you think? Two boys, a pair?

Impossible to sex visually, they are monomorphic, but if they beat the snot out of each other, then they are probably two males. Males don't get along at all. Keep them in separate cages, and they will blow you away with their singing, as they will compete with each other, especially if you manage to get a female.

Only males sing.

There is a wire divider and they can't get to each other.
Would it help if I put a solid divider so they don't see each other?
Would that get them singing?

I've never had trouble getting mine to sing, but I have a pair plus one extra male in a separate cage, so the males are challenging each other. They can hear each other but not see each other. I've never had just two males.

I have no idea as to sex but good for you for giving them good homes where they can enjoy life and live well without beating each other up. Good luck with them!

They are looking much better but I still don't whos, who, in the zoo!
I hear singing but when I try to see which one is doing it they stop.

I will have to have them DNA tested.

BigBear0007 They are looking MUCH better! When you have two males, they both should sing I would think. Singing is how the males attract a hen (they certainly aren't going to get one with their looks and color lol). My two males are competitive, both sing, though they really can't see each other. They are in nearby cages. The difference may be that there is a hen in one of the cages, so that brings out the competitive nature of both the males.

I think because they fought when they were in a cage together, they may be two males, as the males will fight to the death with each other. If they were a male/female pair, I can't imagine any fighting, as my male/female pair tend to get along just fine. In fact, with my male/female pair, the hen tends to be the dominant one.

Wow I looked up gray singing finch and they are aggressive, but I didn't realize they were aggressive toward each other???? I bet there pretty singing but I'll stick with my societies and the passive side of the scale.love to keep leaving thank-you for sharing

I'm going move one upstairs where I have a canary and see what happens? I really do believe it's two males.
A male and a female should get along?
Two females should get along?
Two males will kill each other!

Am I correct in these assumptions?

move one to upstairs is right to make sure who are they!

A male and a female should get along=>not really, you sould let them seaperate until when they ready to mate

Two females should get along=>not really, they also will bite each others.

Two males will kill each other=>if you take them in a small cage it should be, take them in a aviary.
