Yes, they both are perching on my finger, and the one with the strange foot, (s)he can move his/her toes (you can see that in the video too), but still standing the same way, and falls if leaning on that foot. I'm hoping that it will eventually turn the right way. Btw, you think they might both be female?

Also, since I've made that post, I went to take them out for a feeding, I took out the biggest one first, and the smallest one (the one with the turned foot), flew a few inches out of his bed!!! So i went ahead and put them in their cage. Then, the next feeding, I took out the smallest one first, and the biggest one actually flew and perched on the side of their cage bottom (I removed the cage off of the bottom to reach them better). They've actually been sleeping quite well in their cage. I'm going to leave them in their cage tonight and keep the lamp on them.

Btw, you think they might both be female?

To tell you the truth that was just a guess (I'm a complete newbie). I can't see hints of the cheek colours that the males later get so I just *assumed* both are females, but lovezebs will be along shortly to tell me how wrong I am :) Just took a look at images online and I see males look similar to yours, so who knows?

Is it just the foot that is injured, or is the hip dislocated perhaps?

Anyway, sounds like they are doing well under your care.

mlisa73 You have done a wonderful job with them, and you should be very proud! It is not easy to hand feed, you have saved these two. Isn't it fun when they recognize and respond to your voice? =D>

I can't see a problem with the chick's leg this time. Has it healed, or was there never really an injury?

No, actually the foot is still turned when it's standing. But perching looks fairly normal (still slightly turned, not parallel to back toe, or whatever you call them.. talons? I'm new too). I think (s)he's gonna be just fine!

It sounds like its grip on the perch holds the leg in the correct alignment. Good to hear it's coping!

Cheers.

I started from the beginning read the thread and watched your videos. This is a great story of redeeming a potentially awful outcome. I loved your videos so well done. Do you have a nest cam? You can be proud of your photography as well as your babies. Watching them hop into your hand is just adorable.
Not breedi g their parents again sounds like very good advice.
I'm looking forward to your next video!

Thank you Spreckles for reading the thread. I wouldn't have been able to have gotten these little stinkers this far without this forum and the Grace of God, lol.

And yes, I do have a nest cam actually. Jason and Isabella (the parents) have laid 4 more eggs which are due to begin hatching next weekend. So, next Friday, February 12th, I will start streaming it HERE. I know you guys suggested no more clutches just yet, but I'm gonna try keeping fresh egg and veggies, and will hand-raise after they reach a week or so (or earlier if need be). I feel way more confident now! :D

I think the advice not to let them breed was because of the temperament of the male. If you want to breed get a new male and find a home for the one who picked the babies or separate him and give him a male buddy. In all species of animals the best should be bred. If he picks a baby again since you have started with a lot more food available then you will know the right thing to do. You also need to separate them so no inbreeding.
I hope it goes very well! These babies are delightful. You did an incredible job with them! =D>

I would definitely not breed these 2 together, especially not this soon after the last clutch. They may need new mates or a bit more time to mature.

Yeah, I was gonna say, first Daddy did it, then Mommy started doing it. But they did so well the first week! #-o And I do plan on removing the nest after this clutch. I wasn't really planning on having tons of birds. I just wanted a few I could actually interact with. Might even get another cage later for Mom and Dad and put all the babies in their bigger cage (if y'all think that's an ok idea). Also.. do I stop giving Mom and Dad egg once it comes time to remove the nest, to further discourage mating, or do they still need it?

mlisa73 I'm late to the DAMNED party again.. BUT what a great thread I'm so glad you saved these little guys!!! I didn't watch the videos yet, but I looked at your FB page with the pics They are little cuties. I think there is another thread of yours on here somewhere with newer posts, but I was here so I figured I'd just mention it. What a great job you did! How are they? Still tame? I've heard hand feds can be a lot of work even after the feedings as you become thier "flock" so you need to spend more time with them than a parent raised finch... Not that that is a problem but like for me, I work.... so they might get lonely. Anyhow. I wanted to comment (even though it's been a month) you can give all of your birds egg food, just less if they aren't molting or breeding or feeding young. Once a week or so. I give it to mine about that often (sometimes less, not going to lie, it's been a VERY BUSY winter for me) but Now I'm back into the swing of things. So my moulting gouldians are getting 2-3 times a week right now with sprouted seed (i usually add feather fast to the eggs too for them) but once they are done I'll cut it back to like once a week or there abouts. Anyway, agian sorry I'm so late to the party, but I did want to leave a comment, and say GREAT WORK!

Try getting a pair of society finches , they might take care of the babies , put the zebra finches in another cage.
EDIT: Oh I guess I was late too , lol.
