oils for preening gland

Post by ac12 » Tue Feb 09, 2016 7:37 pm

I have a couple of societies that when they bath, they get SOAKED, and their feathers mat down. I have other birds that bath and don't get SOAKED like the societies do. My other societies, that I had in the past, never had this problem of their feathers getting SOAKED. This kinda tells me that the societies may not have enough oil in their preening gland to coat their feathers to make the feathers water repelant.

All of my societies, past and present are on the same basic pellet diet.

Is this a food issue where I can suppliment with something, or is this something else?

Hi Gary.

A lot of my guys get soaked, drenched, water logged, lol.

However, once they puff and fluff and dry, their feathers always go back to normal, nice and sleek.

They are all on a seed, greens, fruit, hard boiled eggs, mixed with spray Millet and pulverized freeze dried meal worms diet. No pellets.

I add a couple of drops of vitamins two or three times a week, and twice a month I mix in a few drops of 'Ecotrition Skin & Plumage' into their eggs (which is something new I've just recently started).
