Hi folks I am Dave and I live in Shelter Cove. I was very into the hobby when I was younger to the point I turned our breakfast nook into a large indoor aviary with lights and live plants. Birds of every kind from owl Finches to button quail. It looked like a zoo exhibit. To me at least and that was all that mattered. I am now retired and would like an outdoor aviary on my deck. I am wondering if Finches can withstand two months of foggy weather in the summer, and the type of weather we have in the winter. Or am I confined to a small indoor flight cage. I was thinking of having removable plastic panels as protection during storms. Thanks itcan be in the fifties for weeks on end. What do you think.

Welcome to the forum! I had to google Shelter Cove to find that it is located in northern California on the coast. Looks like a pretty wonderful place to retire! I can't really answer your questions on outdoor aviaries since I don't have one, my birds are all inside, but there are others on the forum who will probably be able to help you. There's lots of good reading at www.finchinfo.com, where you may find that things have changed a bit since you used to keep birds. If you put your general location in your profile, it will help later on when members are answering your questions.

Welcome to the Forum from Canada.

Shelter Cove, looks absolutely lovely. I love the Washington, Oregon, Northern California coastline, and I'm extremely envious of you my friend

Is it possible for you to build an indoor /outdoor aviary?
With the coastal weather of winds, rain, fog, and dampness, this would give you and your birds the best of two words.
