BCCB'S egg explosion

Post by slwatson » Sat Feb 13, 2016 6:16 pm

I've been watching my BCCB'S very closely these last couple of weeks because I haven't seen much of anything as far as a successful hatching of eggs. They had made a great nest, and would breed, go to the nest for a while, stop sitting, and then start the process over again. I noticed they started working on a new nest, so I pulled the old one out today. I can't believe what I found!

I am just sitting here stunned. :-O What in the world?!!

That is 43 eggs!!

She sat atop a LITERAL MOUNTAIN of over 35 freekin eggs to lay that last clutch!

I simply cannot get over the visuals on what went on in that nest the last few times she laid. Bill is in the office with me and even he is like "LAWD! Thats a ton of eggs!"

That is one of the most incredible and hysterically funny things I have ever seen on this site. =))

Chances are that's not from just one clutch. When one clutch doesn't hatch, they lay another on top, and so on and so on

=)) Babs and Elana, I felt the EXACT same way when I dumped out that nest! I agree with Karen....she just kept laying clutch over clutch, and I had no idea. I didn't dare touch the nest for fear she would abandon, but I finally decided to because nothing was happening and they stopped sitting. I accidentally broke some in the nest, so there's actually almost 50

There's only one hen, so this all came from one bird. She's getting a MUCH deserved break right now.

I have no clue how to approach this pair from now on....I don't know if it's healthy for her to do that, but how do I stop it without causing her to abandon the nest completely?

I've been giving her egg shell, but I'll give her more tonight just in case. My son was with me when I dumped it, and we were both floored! They just kept coming and coming........

The gift that keeps on giving , Stacie

Definitely offer calcium (as this gal must have depleted all of her resources ).

Personally, I would take out the nest for a while.

LOL! I did take that nest out, but yesterday I noticed the male looking for whatever scraps of coconut fiber he could find to stuff in between the artificial leaves that are hanging on the back of the cage. At the rate he's going, it will be a while before he's able to build anything, so she should get plenty of rest and calcium before it's completed.
