Incubator babies hatched

Post by Babs _Owner » Sun Feb 14, 2016 4:38 am

Before we removed Brat's gouldian fledgling we also removed a few of her eggs. Two of which hatched a few days ago.

I'm typing this running on about 3 hours a sleep a night the last few days. This is a great event, but I'd like to say a few words of caution about hatching eggs.

One of new arrivals are in the 3rd picture., 1st picture is the exhausting log of feedings and ATTEMPTED feeding, (3rd day) I FINALLY have them eating and up to strength. Middle picture is of the babies stuffed (I cannot believe it is 3:30 am), and very happy. I have to go to bed or I will fall asleeped on the floor.

3rd picture is an example of the daily log I took to keep track of who was eating and who was not.

The pictures look great, but the reality is that incubator hatched babies are frail and weak. You basically have to live every second staring at them and when they open their mouths you FEED and hope :YMPRAY: they dont get tired and fall back off to sleep before you have a chance to keep them from starving later 15-20 minutes.

This will be the first time I can sleep for a few hours without worry. I'm going to pass out now. Night y'all.

If you look at the log, you will see day TWO (at this point Im alreadly tired), baby on the right column of the logsheet will NOT eat until around 10 am. I almost lost him. I look at the numbers and I was feeding or "attemping" feedings about an average of every 20 minutes. Many of the hours of the first day and 1/2 was constantly wiping pedialyte around their beaks to keep them from dying.

Thankfully on day 3 they are hungry, happily begging. But it took two solid days to even get them to beg!

So as you can see in the last picture, they are fat happy stuffed babies, but people before you handfeed, please consider the comittement .

Up after a few hours of sleep and both are still begging and took their morning meal. I think I have them both "out of the woods" now.

I was completely wiped out when I typed that in the wee hours of the night.

I've had a nap and reread it. Lawd, what a scattered explanation. (my head is still foggy).

My focus of the post was supposed to be about using an incubator and the low success rate of hatching, and the weak chicks that hatch from it.

I have truly never had to work so HARD and LONG to get these chicks to respond. I think the incubator is better for those last minute emergencies only (where the egg is very close to hatching but something happens with the parent).

Everyone hates to toss viable eggs or see them die in the nest, but this is not the greatest option for having a strong hatchling.

Not sure I would ever try to use an incubator for finch eggs. I never had to handfeed a chick at night and just the thought of it would encourage me to find alternatives.
I sure do hope you can keep these progressing forward. We can all learn from your experience.
Looking forward to updates

I wished the other "alternatives" were available. The eggs were incubated when we candled them and no societies would get broody for me. Go figure, my societies decided they actually didnt want to mate for a change.

One is weaker than the other and prefers to lay on his back at all times with his tiny feet splayed up in the air, wobble his head a little and wait for a feeding. The other is upright and actively begging strong.

I will see how the weaker one makes it through it's first night without a feeding (cause I have to sleep sometime). The bigger one is quite strong and should have no problem holding his own tonight.

Congrats.
Wish you all the luck to keep going.
I "tried" several times, and as you said, lack of sleep was NOT FUN.

I feel refreshed after 5 hours of sleep (finally).

It's an aweful anxiety to have when you wake up, rush down to the brooder and wonder what you will see when you open it after you have left the weak little ones alone for the first time in days.

I waited to look until after I have mixed up the formula let it warm and made a cup of coffee. Give myself a chance to fully wake up before I feed those itsy bitsy mouths.

The little one was the one I was most worried about, as it's beggin relax was much weaker, and feeding was hit or miss many times.

So I got through half a cup, sat down took a DEEP breath, opened the lid. And there I see it! Two hungry strong Wobble- heads!! :-BD <3

Oh what a relief! Looks like today will be a good day!

Right below I took a shot of them sleeping together before they woke up and realized it was breakfast time <3

Thank the Bird gods, and all the powers that be!

They are super adorable, the way they curl up together like puppies.

Spreckles

Yesterday went very smoothly with both begging and feeding strong.

Last night was the first night I got to sleep more than 4-5 hour. A whopping 7 hours and this morning they were strong and hungry. <3

Amazing yesterday.....I watched the little weak one practically grow before my eyes as this was really this first day since Thursday when he hatched that he even begged enthusiastically.

Wonderful news to wake up to this morning :D

I'm so happy that they are thriving, and so happy that you managed to get some sleep.

Have a wonderful day.
