Cats continue to be a nuisance

But we all know most people don't care where there cats cause problems.

Do we now? As both a bird AND cat owner of 50+years (also dogs, fish, hamsters, and rabbits) I beg to differ.

Seriously, the OP is letting THEIR cat out through an open window. I hardly think there is any room for grousing about OTHER people letting their cats out.

Chemical deterrents, loud noises, lights or even angry shouts even if they did something they would still be a bad idea , since you dont want to poison your birds , you dont want to stress the birds and you dont wanna wake them up at night ^_^
Anyways I might suggest a dog as a cat wouldn't come near a dog , and dog wouldn't mind the birds ... good luck

StodOne, I don't have outside aviaries, nor are there cats around here. I don't actually need a solution to cats. I've just been down that road before, and I know that it isn't easy to deter a cat. Or a mink, for that matter.

Sojourner not to dreg up old things, but not been on the forum for a while.
Just wanted to clarify:

my comment read MOST PEOPLE, not all cat owners (don't take things personally or out of context) and with specific reference to our situation in South Africa. Here cats roam at will, most don't care where they go or what they do when they are not on their property. Most own too many to control.
I too own cats so being a cat owner am responsible by keeping my cats in at night etc. However most don't - there is no reason to, like predators or cold etc.

Can you screen in the structure the canaries sit under sort of extra protection to keep the cats off your tables and keep you birds safe from other predators.

The electrical fence seems ideal but what if your cat contacts it...I would be concerned as frightened as she is it might scare her even more.
