Re: Damn damn damn...
Well... we just got the worst news ever I reckon.
Dad has been battling febrile neutropenia and an abscess for a few weeks and had it surgically excised the 2 weekends ago. He went back in after it got re-infected again and had it cleaned out again this last weekend.
And today, he had to go and see his surgeon for a checkup and we got the news.
The scar from his original bowel cancer surgery is badly infected. He has been told he can never have chemo again because of the infections.
They won't be able to manage the cancer through chemo and his surgeon and the nurse who comes around to dress his abscess wound are both putting him in for palliative care.
He won't be making it Melbourne now.

Oh Mark.....
I feel so sad for you and your family.
Sometimes it seems that there is simply no end to the pain and the misery that life throws at us.....
I am so so sorry my friend.

Mark, I am so sorry to hear this. Life can be so unbearable at times. Cherish the time you have with your Dad.

Turn towards home, and go there. Many overs, over woods and fields, streams and hills, many overs. Just turn towards home. How else would one go there? Perhaps it was a dream, and you have awakened from it. May the earth rise up beneath you, with home in your heart, and your person waiting.

Hi Mark,
Just checking up on you and your family.
How is your Dad doing today?
How are you, and the rest of your family holding up?

Hi Elana,
Dad seems to be recovering well from the neutropenia and the abscess in his buttock. However, he is still as weak as a kitten and it's going to be a while before he is 100% recovered from the adverse effects of the chemo.
However, his surgeon has told him that he can't have chemo again. We are now hopeful that he will recover enough that he will be able to return to Melbourne
He (dad) is optimistic enough to think that he will recover enough to drive himself over to Melbourne in his Land Rover. My plan is to put him, my mum and their cars (the Landy and a Mitsubishi magna) on the Indian Pacific to Adelaide, I jump in my 4x4 and tow the trailer over there and meet up with them in Adelaide and then we all drive the remaining distance to Melbourne.
I think that plan 2 is more likely to happen
He also wants to buy himself a small pop-top camper trailer and go touring every now and then with mum.
Thanks everyone for your thoughts over the last couple of months.

Sounds like he's not ready to give up yet. As long as he has something to look forward to, then that will keep him going.
I agree that plan #2, sounds more do-able, and I hope that things work out for you guys.
Sending best wishes down your way.
