Society finch sexing

How can I tell a male from a female society finch ?
Also I need to know if I can keep the society finches in the same room where I want to breed another pair of zebra finches they wouldn't disturb them or something like that ?(They wont be in the same cage , different cage but same room).
I need the answer quickly because tomorrow morning I am going to buy a pair of socie's , thanks!

Society males sing.

It is almost impossible to keep Zebras from breeding if they have a nest.

paul-inAZ Yes i know that , but having another pair around them might disturb them or something , but then again maybe they will not wait any more and do it instantly when someone else come in

As long as they are in separate cages, it should be no problem at all. It is when they are in the same cage that problems may occur. Societies are impossible to sex visually, you have to wait until you see a male sing.

With Societies, you have to watch them for a while, to see who will puff up like a little pear and start singing (that's your male). Females will make a little chirping sound, sounding like a cricket.

Zebras and Societies in the same room, should not be a problem.

lovezebs and others , thanks for responses , lovezebs i am aware that socies wont attack zebs but will it reduce the chances for them to mate, sally has already answered on that . i have heard the female do a long tune similar to a zebra/canary mix but with a really low volume i was barely able to hear it xD , the other one just cherped , i will have to wait and ... hear xD

The breeder told me the ones with a band on their legs were males , the ones that didn't have the band were females , so if I trust him I have a male and a female , if it turns out differently well then I will need to buy 2 more haha xD

Wasted no time building a new cage for them , took my friend and me a few hours to complete , it is nothing special but it will do ^_^

According to your post, you said that the 'female ' was singing (?) That can't be right , as female Societies, will not sing.

Regarding the Socies and Zebras, lol. When I said that they should be ok in the same room, I meant that the Societies being there, should not bother the Zebras breeding. Seeing as they are housed in different cages, there should not be any issues whatsoever.

Anyways I have heard like a cricket noise like you said but it was very low toned , barely was able to hear it .
I have hird the white one chirp and do that little cricket sound , and heard the darker one chirp, I also heard something when I was in another room but I don't know who it was , it was louder then when I heard the white one sing.

The finch in the video you posted, is a female.
So if your light coloured one is making these sounds, it is a girl.

Give them a couple of days to get comfortable, then you'll figure it out.

Oh, you can play the songs of the birds in the sites which I posted, to see what reaction they'll give you. Very often, when a male hears another male singing, he will start singing as well. I've actually sexed Society finches in pet shops by doing this trick.

EDIT: I have played the videos , the first ones to react were the male zebra finch and then the female zebra finch , societies were just beeping , haha xD
