Hammy the Tame Gouldian update

I just got a new video of my Ham to show how tame she is. Shout out to Elana in the video.

Looks like she is going to be tame for life. I am TRYING to get Merlin to mimic my whistle on video ( I will get it eventually). She's almost done molting and an amazing part of each day.

WOW THAT WAS SO COOL!!!!! Your whistle is impressive woman. Hammy is so sweet what a special relationship you have with her. Her sibling looks ver curious like he or she would like to give it a try. Just amazing so neat to see that little tiny bird on your fingers like that. My favorite part was how fast she came when you snapped your fingers. Hand raised babies!

Does Hammy have two red spots on her cheeks, or has she been playing with Mommy's makeup ?

I watched the video earlier, but have been having spotty Internet lately, so have been struggling with posting lately. Some posts go through, some don't. It's a pain in the butt

She is a lot of fun and gets upset if she doesn't get hand-time twice a day. Her 3 siblings will jump on my hand if I am very still (and if Hammy initiates first). If I go to touch her siblings, they fly away, so they are kind of tame.

Elana, yep she has red cheeks under that BH. I really wish I could get Merlin to whistle, it blows Bill's mind. The first part of Merlin's song is exactly the whistle I did on the video. I never knew gouldians copy human whistles. As I work in my office I can hear Merlin from time to time doing my whistle in the livingroom. It makes me smile while I work. And once in a while he will puff his chest up while I am right beside the cage and BELT it out STRONG and loud! But if I lift up the camera, he's like "What? I' not doing crap for you lady with that box in my face."

Karen, here's a link to the cage I use. It is sectioned off. The 3 with Hammy have the left side. Brat & Ricco have the right side. And the whole flight will be opened up when all the juvies color up and I figure out which babies I will keep. Of course Hammy & Merlin are staying.

I'm starting to believe, that most birds can imitate sounds. I will often hear someone in one of the flights making little sounds like a different species. I think it depends on how often they hear a particular sound, and how young they are when they begin hearing it (just my two cents worth ).

After what I have experienced I certainly agree with you. They must take pieces of what they hear and incorporate it into their song (like when they take bits of their fathers song).

Even the society Penguin (CackleJax's son) has a portion of CJ's aweful song, just not the hysterical "honk honk" at the end.

**edit** While I was typing this Merlin started singing and we whistled the tune back and forth a few times from room to room. I got up with my camera to get some video and he was like " Ummm, no.... "

Hahah, this going to be an adventure trying to film him.

Set the camera up on a tripod so they get used to it being there. Get it all pointed right and everything so all you have to do is turn it on in passing.
