Hi All,
I purchased a female gouldian about 6 months ago and shortly after I got her she got puffed up and stayed that way until even now. The breeder is where I have gotten all of my other gouldians from and his set-up is always nice and clean and his birds have always been healthy.
She tends to occasionally have runny stool that sticks to her cloaca feathers sometimes and I have isolated her and treated her with everything from S76 to VetRX (upper respiratory meds) to Sulmet which is an antibacterial for coccidiosis.
She also does this strange thing where she seems to be either coughing or tapping her tail on the perch. I should also mention that she is not well tolerated by any of the other birds in the flock, not even the bachelor males. In the attached picture she is molting so she is a little rough looking and if you look closely you may be able to see what i mean about the vent. Has anyone experienced this before or have any idea what could be going on with her? Thanks!

Re: Gouldian Health Question
Sorry I can't really chime in with what could be wrong with your girl, but I did want to say molt or not, she's a beauty! It seems to me you have treated for everything it could be. What is her diet like? Have you ever tried any of the "super foods" like Miracle meal? Do you give her eggs? Just wondering if some high protein stuff, and like a Guardian Angel mixed into her soft food for a while to up her vitamin intake would help her, also maybe the electrolyte mix (i think there is a recipe on the Pinned posts when you first sign in to the forum) Sorry I'm not much help, but diet and lighting and temperature play a factor, but I would say if its been six month it can't really be an illness per se, typically because of their size these poor birds once sick, "go" pretty quick.... Or at least deteriorate so that you can diagnose better. I would wait til some other people chime in, but what is her diet? Does she get fresh veggies, protein foods like eggs, do you have UVAUVB lighting, and do you give her 12 awake 12 asleep hours? Have you ever added vitamins to the water? Again some of these things may help, or one of those Birdy Super products like NV powder (i think is one) or Guardian Angel... Sorry for your girl, I hope she gets better, and she is QUITE lovely.... That is what I wanted and I got a BH/YTB.LB/YB.... I THINK!!! LOL Good luck and keep us posted, also post the answers to the questions i've asked and the other elder members of the forum maybe able to help better than me!

- I haven't given her any super food, but she does get egg (shell and all) at least a couple of times a week. They get fresh veggies but they almost never touch them. As far as vitamins, I alternate vitamin/iodine with each water change.
2) Lighting - I have them under UV Lighting placed on top of the cage and I also open the blinds behind their cage because they seem to really enjoy it and the males sing like crazy once I do.
3) 12 hour cycle - I try to give them a good 12 hour hour cycle and have the lighting on a timer.
All of my other birds look great...she is my only problem child
Thank you for all the advice and suggestions Inlovesorange!

You mentioned coughing. Is it anything like this:

If so, I'm not sure of the exact disease but I think it is a respiratory infection, and it is quite difficult to cure. In *most* cases I can cure a coughing Gouldian like this with serial application of two different antibiotics: Oxymav B followed by Triple C (or visa-versa). One application of either medication slowed the infection down but did not eradicate it completely. The disease is easily spread, probably through the water feeder, so I recommend you immediately remove a coughing finch to a hospital cage and then disinfect all the water feeders plus clean out the cage tray just in case the disease is spread via the droppings.
Can you provide a video of your Gouldian coughing?
