Is my bird poorly. I need help

Post by Adambell1 » Fri Apr 15, 2016 12:41 pm

I bought two paired finches a week ago and this morning she had a bald patch on her rear end and this evening it is significantly bigger. I have been told she may be about to lay eggs. Is this baldy common and what should i do. I hate to think she may die.
Thanks

Adambell1 First, we need a little more information. What species of finch? How long have you had them? Do you know their ages? What size cage are they being kept in? Do they have a nest and nesting materials? Once we have more information, we may be able to help.

It could be that her mate is plucking her, or she is plucking herself. If she/he/or both are in breeding condition. they will often resort to plucking to get feathers for nesting material. Another possibility is that their cage is not roomy enough, and so they pluck as a sign of aggression, being territorial. Lastly, you sometimes simply get an aggressive bird that tends to feather pluck.

Welcome to the forum! There is lots of good reading at www.finchinfo.com, where you will find many articles on finch care. If you put your general location in your profile, it makes it easier for members to help you sometimes. I did delete your other post, since it was pretty much a duplicate of this one. As a newbie, your posts go into a moderator queue, so they don't get posted until a moderator logs on and approves all newbie posts.

Adambell1 According to the cage calculator at the Finch Information Center, that size cage can just hold one pair of birds. Once your birds do settle down to breeding, that cage will be inadequate for the parents plus their young adult babies.

Do you know what species of finch you have? You can go to the species profiles at the Finch Information Center to identify them, or you can post photos here for one of us to identify them for you.
