Thanx guys! I did what you suggested Babs and that stopped them from going on the roof. Also I put strips of Kleenex like you stated Barbara inside the nest at the bottom. I observed them all weekend and yesterday morning I woke up and noticed a strip of Kleenex hanging outside the nest opening, meaning someone went in and pulled it out. :D
I kept observing them throughout the day and noticed the female was inside for a long time then she came out and ate food and the male went inside for a while. Then finally for bedtime they both went inside and stood in the whole night. \:D/
This morning before going to work I put some more hay and noticed both of them taking it to the nest one by one. I'm so excited I didn't even want to come to work today LOL!!

I also placed a different nest box, bigger and more square but they didn't care for it at all. I'll take new pics and display.

Thank you all for the tips!

It sounds like they are settling in. Is this your first experience at breeding finches? The first one is so exciting (they all are, actually!). Breeding teaches us patience, as we are so eager to see those eggs, and then babies, and it always seems like forever till they fledge.

Sally

Yes, my first time at breeding finches. I have experience w/ love birds, don't know if they're the same in breeding. The love birds were really easy for me. I learned my experience from when I was really young to not be inpatient and let them do what's natural to them. I had cockatiels when I was young and as soon as they mom laid eggs I took them out to show my dad and the minute after I put them back in the nest box the mom tossed all her eggs :(
From there on I'm very careful when handling the eggs/babies. With the love birds all I did was wash my hands before/after I handled the eggs/babies.

Well I got back from vacation Tuesday this week and noticed 5 eggs in the nest \:D/
My bird sitter told me while I was on vacation Tuesday last week that she saw 2 eggs so I'm guessing the mom laid the last egg on Friday of last week which I guess they should be hatching by the end of next week. [-o<
I'm so excited. Thank you guys for tips/suggestions. :) I'll post new pics and with a new topic once I get a chance. When I noticed the 5 eggs the mom went out to eat and drink and as soon as I got my phone to take a pic of the eggs she flew back in...lol. They both sit on the eggs throughout the day and night but the mom never comes out unless it's for food and water. The dad takes a break once in a while throughout the day and comes out of the nest.
