Gouldian in trouble....

Post by slwatson » Wed Apr 20, 2016 10:17 am

The first gouldian male I got when I started working with finches is not doing well. I named him Ares because he was tough and had been through a lot. I bought him from a family owned pet store, when he was crammed in a tiny cage with six other gouldians. I got his mate from there too, and she died a couple of weeks after I got her. He's been sick off and on, mainly with respiratory issues, and I've been able to treat him and get him 100% better each time. This morning as I was rushing to leave for work, I noticed he was sleeping with his head buried in his wing while everyone else was flying around him....bad sign :( I checked on him a few minutes later, and he was on the bottom of the cage, barely able to keep his eyes open, and was all fluffed up. I don't think I got him to the hospital cage in time, so I'm dreading going home today...hoping for a miracle.

Hoping for the best. It is so stressful when these things happen just when you are going out the door, and you can't do much for them.

Hope that all is well with your boy.

It's difficult.... sometimes a hard begining can be remedied with a a good diet etc. sometimes not.

Best wishes for your little fella.

When I got home yesterday, he was already gone....poor thing. I tried so hard to keep him healthy, and I'm sure he was showing signs of something that I missed. I forgot to check his breast bone, but I'm guessing it would have been sharp. His recent bout of sickness was either respiratory or air sac mites possibly due to the stress of molting. I treated him for both just in case, but didn't have an antibiotic on hand. Not sure what is was....it was very sad to hold his beautifully colored body in my hand  I'm just hoping the rest of the finches who were housed with him stay healthy.

So sorry for your loss. Unfortunately, our finches often don't show signs of illness till they are so far gone that it is hard to save them, even when we are home.

Sorry to hear that he didn't make it. It's so hard to know what to do even if you have all the medications on hand.
