Coconut Oil

Post by GouldieFledge » Tue Apr 26, 2016 9:28 pm

Does anyone know if it's safe to apply a small amount of coconut oil to finches' legs as a moisturizer? I'm talking real-deal coconut oil: cold pressed, unrefined, organic, the stuff you're supposed to use on yourself. (Which I do)

I'm thinking lovezebs may have some insight...I remember her talking about using olive oil on her birds' legs to hydrate/soothe.

Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks!

I have used both olive oil, and coconut oil on some of my birds feet and legs. We live in an incredibly dry climate over here, and skin does get dry (both on people and birds ).

It works well. I rub it gently over their legs, over their feet, and between their tiny toes.

I also use it, when banding chicks, to make sure that rings slide on smoothly, without abrading tender baby skin.
