Zebra Finches:Breeding Q

Post by amly » Wed Apr 27, 2016 1:07 pm

Hello everyone!

I am new to these forums and I've already learned much from reading previous posts.

I had a question about breeding.

I have a pair of zebra finches that have been laying eggs since I first got them in January. My husband and I decided to let them have a clutch (this was around the end of Feb). The first clutch had 2 eggs (plus some they laid outside the nest that fell and broke), one wasn't viable and the second was a still born. The second clutch they accidently broke their eggs.. Since then, they have been mating and nesting but there hasn't been any eggs in at least 2 weeks. They both seem to be acting fairly normal.

What can I do to help them out? Should i remove the nest for a certain period, or just clean it out and let them start over?

Thanks for the advice :)

They may be young and inexperienced. You can always pull out the nest and all nesting materials for several weeks up to several months. I'd also stop feeding any egg food or high-protein food, since that stimulates breeding. After a little break like this, you can set them up again, and start giving them egg food again.

Thanks for the welcome and replies!

These two are adopted. I was told the male is around 5 years old and the female unknown. They have produced successful clutches before.

We will try hitting the "reset" button and give them a break then.
