Gouldian surprise

Post by Egret » Fri Apr 29, 2016 11:32 pm

This morning I got a fun surprise when I took a good look at my clutch of Gouldians.

First I should say, this is my first pair of Gouldians, and I got them in a fairly haphazard way. One was obtained through Craigslist, it's hen had died eggbound, and the college boy who was selling the bird knew his age (18 months, more or less) but nothing about his genetic history. The bird is a RH, White breast, normal green. The hen I bought at a bird fair from a guy who colony breeds them and keeps no records, but his birds looked very clean, shiny and sleek, and energetic compared to most of the rest that were there. She is a RH, Purple breast, normal green.

My surprise this morning, when I finally got a really good look at the babies with all their back and wing feathers opened up is that 3 of the 4 are the typical olive green color, and the other is going to be a blue! At least that's how it looks to me. The bird is just a plain grey all over, no trace of green.

So if this baby is blue, I guess that means both my red head green birds are split to blue? Cool!
