Wow we really had no idea how much we would do to this house. I am really proud of what we accomplished with a lot of sweat and a moderately small amount of cash. Less than a thousand. Since we can only post 5 pics will be choosy. We really spent time on the kitchen I love it. My carpenter hubby rebuilt the insides of several, well almost all of the cabinets. We used bead board, birch plywood, and a LOT of painting. Not to mention the cleaning, the sanding, the cleaning again after sanding and repeat. Whew? You get it?
My birds are now outdoor residents. Its beautiful weather and hopefully they can eat some flying insects we certainly have a plethora of those! They seem happy out there and so much easier to take care of. I did put the nests back so they have some shelter. I put 2 nests in each cage to avoid fighting, so far so good. This arrangement does require extra vigilance with the cat! I have a squirt bottle with vinegar water ready to shoot any porch tresspasser of either canine or feline variety.
Today is my first down day with nothing to do since we started packing 2 months ago. First I stayed in my pajamas. Second I actually crawled into the bed. I bought the loveliest curtains they are silk recycled Indian sari's, my inner hippie is still alive. I really love this house. I don't know if this is our landing place or not however, because the front land and 2 houses are also for sale. A man next door is interested in it and he wants to move the entrance road and some other ideas I really don't like. Only time will tell.
For now we are here. All my birds are alive and thriving. Blue still gets pecked or scratches his own cheeks at times and I don't worry about it. Can't prevent it. The Socie Sisters are the sweetest companions. Hoping to have some crested babies here one of these days!

Great! Everything looks all ship shape and Bristol fashion. I like the hanging cages, LOL! I guess you bring them in at night? I couldn't do that here, we get strong gusts of wind that actually hurl people's patio furniture into other people's yards if we're not careful, LOL!
I just bought a house myself, closing is May 31. It had smokers in it so a complete clean-up and paint job is required. I will be cleaning all surfaces with TSP, then rinse with a bleach-water solution, then rinse with plain water. Ceilings and floors too. The duct work which is thankfully very compact will be replaced when the HVAC guys replace the furnace and put in an AC unit. I won't actually clean and paint until they're done. Sure hope I can get the timing to work out as I had hoped to have plenty of time for the place to air out after painting so I can move the birds in.
It was military housing in the 50s, this was for the brass so its roomier and better appointed than enlisted housing.
I have original hand-built cabinets that have 57 years of multiple paint coatings to be stripped off and repainted. How did you guys do your cabinets? What paint did you use? Did you brush paint or spray paint? Any pointers would be GREATLY appreciated. These have hand-built wooden runners but all drawers still slide freely and sit properly even after all this time. They sure don't build 'em like that anymore! I'm hoping that all I'll have to replace are the pulls.
These guys were not only smokers, but apparently addicted to coffee. They had 3 coffee pots, two Mr. Coffee types on either side of the stove, and one on the stove itself, LOL!
On the opposite wall from the countertop and range they used to have the water heater and washer and dryer. Those were moved out to the garage. Now there is a dishwasher and a moveable cart sitting there, with more wall cabinets. I plan to put in a utility sink and a floor cabinet. I haven't seen a house with a utility sink in literally decades, not unless I put one in myself, but I don't know how people get by without them. I have a ton of uses for them myself, LOL!

Wow that looks like FL but they don't have strong winds? I really like Ecoquest air purifiers for removal of smoke oders. They really do work. I have 2 neither are in good working order because of age and they would get rid of the new paint smell. I had them for asthma and allergies. They can remove most any oder.
We worked really hard we took everything apart. Removed the hinges and knobs and used a power sander. No point in using stripper unless you want to stain and varnish. I used oil based enamel with a smooth sponge roller for cabinet work, a brush and paint thinner. Whenever your brush gets too " sticky" and hard to work with work it like your cleaning the brush in some thinner. Remove the excess from your brush and you'll. Be amazed at how it improves your paint job. If you have a Sherwyn Williams I think their oil based enamel (alkyloid) paint is one of the best. I used Valspar from LOWES & it is terrible stuff very hard to work with. Use a primer like Kilz first because of smoke.
I would look at pictures on Pinterest to get an idea of what you would like it to look like. Maybe change the counter top? Any natural lighting? Looks like it's in good shape.
We have had a pretty gusty spring. At times I have had to take the birdies and set them on the porch and cover them up because of storms. We are headed into heat and humidity soon which is probably natural for them. Not to mention the bug feasting they can do out there.
Where are you going to put your birds in the new place? I don't envy you moving that is a CHORE!

Thanks for the welcome back. Yawl are both having a rough spring in Texas. We aren't flooded but crazy wind and gullywashers. Of course I take the birds down and cover them for storms. They seem really happy outside. Hopefully they will decrease our gnats and skeeters...and anything else they can catch.
