Squeaky's escape

Post by zebsoc » Wed May 18, 2016 1:59 am

Squeaky is my female zebra.

History:
She's the one that plucked and chased the societies when spring began. [-X
The 2 males that she has shared a cage with have been plucked, under chin and vent area and become stressed and sick and passed away.

She was moved to a cage by herself. 37-18-18
With a mirror.

I got a male zebra May 1st.
Haven't been able to get him a female companion. Store only had one bedraggled female harassed by a bunch of other males in a tiny cage.

I really love my Chirpy. He has the cutest song. Some male zebras song can be a bit tiring to listen to but not Chirpy. I like his song much better than the male society. Tho they compliment each other.

So I placed Chirpy with the 4 societies (3 female/1male) and Canary. He's doing ok. The canary doesn't care to share a perch with him nor do the societies most of the time. And he seems sad at times tho he still sings occasionally during the day.
I did see him take a bath with the fawn and white society. He and she were also sharing the food dish one time.

I had Squeaky cage near the large cage. I had noticed that Squeaky was no longer Squawking and was much mellower.
She had always Squawked badly even when she was with the other males. First time she was mellow and only low chirping.
Yesterday i rearranged the cages. Well after the cage was away from Chirpy cage she started Squawking up a storm.
She has been by herself in her cage for about a month.

This afternoon as I opened the cage door, and its a pretty small door, she zoomed out and right to the top of Chirpy cage.

She was so determined to get inside.

I put in the cage divider in the large cage and opened the door to the empty side.
I also opened both doors to her own cage.

When dark I found her sitting on a perch inside the large cage with Chirpy on a perch nearby on the other side of the divider, and had no trouble closing the door.

I am afraid more for the male zebra if I let her stay. I truly didn't notice her being aggressive or plucking the other males until it was too late.
Yet I feel maybe I should give her this last try. She was So Determined. #-o
This cage is 64-21-35

I am not a expert on any birds but my thought was many put some artificial greenery in your cage for barriers where they can move away from your little chirpy if he starts to get a little to aggressive.my canary was very possive of a few sun decks I put in there cage I ended up taking them out and making a hanging pole with perches going thru it and now they all have there own little perch to sit on in front of the window where they all love to hang out ,no more pecking I also put lots of greenery through the the cage for there private areas, sometimes they make you use your imagination Good luck with your little chirpy

Agree completely with Barbara, lots of greenery and hiding places can help with aggression. Sounds like she was determined to get close to Chirpy!

Barbara
Sally
Thank you for your help

How do I set up greenery without blocking their flying?
The society especially like to fly back and forth from one end to the other.
Any pictures of greenery setup for barriers/private areas?
Any ideas would be appreciated.

I know that my cage is different then yours, mine has a pitched roof and it looks like yours has a flat, but what I do is put most of the greenery on the outside on the top or a little on the sides then pull some of the leaves in so they are above them or along side of them try not to pull to many in because of there poop,I also take some little ones and twist them on the ends of the branches they come off easy and are easy to wash in sink every once in a while I also use real branches along side with some other differnt sizes just a few here and there where there perches are and it should not block flying area.here are a few pictures of mine to give you a idea I try to make it like a tree branch they seem to love bouncing oaround on them and they also like to play with the leaves.I get all my fake greenery athe michaels craft sore when there on sale hope this helps you little squeaky be able to be with some of his friends and no one gets hurt ,just be carefully I don'the use anything to tie branches on I just tested and bend and pull them thru the bars.

Barbara - thank you, great help and pretty plants.

How often do you remove them for cleaning? Do you vary them regularly or keep the same setup long term?

I have had all three of the cages only together for a few weeks so not sure I would just wash and put back when they need it they don't really sit on them too much just next to them so I hope I don'the have to clean too often, but should be pretty easy.

Barbara - I hadn't noticed until I looked again at your last picture that you had combined cages. Would love to see a picture of all your cages together. Very pretty looking cage. Must be quite large with 3 together.
