citronella torches

is it ok to burn citronella torches outside 5 or 6 feet away from a gouldian finch flight i just install a pool and it is 6 feet away from my flight and wanted to use citronella near the pool

I was under the impression citronella wasn't safe for birds. Even outside I think that would be too close to have something burning near the finches.
