a_gouldian So sorry you lost the CB chicks. Waxbills are harder to hand feed than many of the grass finches IMO, I've lost a fair number of them.

As far as separating breeding pairs, it depends. Many breeders do this with Gouldians to give them a rest, but some species do better staying together all the time. I find the African waxbills do just fine staying together as a pair.

I feel bad about separating the Gouldians but all they want to do is breed and lay eggs. She seems a little more upset about the separation if that can be judged by the amount of chirping she does. I wish we had another female Gouldian to put with her but at the present time we only have one pair of Gouldians. She is sharing the cage with two Lavender Waxbills, and most of the time she stays on one side of the cage, and they stay on the other side of the cage. We are planning to get a second pair of Gouldians in the Fall.
