is this safe for me to use
I was planing on putting in a nest when my new cage comes, but want to know if this nesting material is safe to use? Could it get caught on my society finches nails or beak, or maybe become wrapped around a toe. Has anyone used this stuff and had an issue, or am I being paranoid?

Re: is this safe for me to use
What else could I use as nesting material? A list would be great if anyone has one.

What you've put up here mate seems all ok,
Could also try giving some dried grass and a few feathers aswell as some moss etc but make sure that this latter has come from a clean source

Tish
Hi Tish!
I use coconut fiber probably more than any material for my birds, and I also bought a cheap pillow and use the white feathers inside for some of my birds.
I bought a box of the same nesting material you posted a picture of, and I didn't like it. There's not much in the box either. It was more economical for me to go with the other stuff.

Tish Some people have had trouble with the white fibers in that box of nesting material getting wrapped around toes and nails, so I would avoid that. The coco fiber is great, it is what I use for the most part, but you can also offer grasses/hay. White feathers for waxbills to line their nests. You can cut a piece of burlap into small pieces and then shred them into short threads.

I think I'll use the coconut fiber, and does anyone know where to buy burlap in canada?

You should be able to find burlap fabric in any fabric store. I would wash it first, since some fabrics are treated with who knows what.

Hi! I use grass. The orchard grass. Sometimes that small twine gets wrapped around feet and leg bands and can injure/cut off blood supply to baby bird feet. Can result in loss of foot. But some people love fibers and have good luck. To each his own. I just choose not to take a chance.
