Hole in beak. Help

Can anyone tell me what this hole is in my female twinspot's beak?

I'm not 100 % sure but it looks like scaley mite,

Or saying that it also look s like another bird has attacked the bird and pierced the top manibill

I too would guess either an advanced case of scaly mites, or damage from other bird's attack. The scaly mites can be confirmed by a veterinarian, who will take scrapings and then can see the mites under a microscope.

Hopefully they will chime in here and know what it is. I just got these birds not even a week ago from the FinchFarm and had problems with the twinspots ever since. The owls and blues seem to be ok for now UGH

romien to be perfectly fair this is one main reason why I'd never buy any birds without seeing them first

I understand that birds need to be shipped and transported from various places etc but if you know of a buyer and supplier Of birds that is within reach from you and that you are able to drive to I'd then let them buy the birds first,

By letting them know roughly the type of birds yer after they can then phone you once they've got them,

You can then drive and go and look at em ,

If you don't like the look of em you haven't gotta buy them

I have been in contact with the Finch Farm since I got them last Friday. The twin spots came in with very long nails and I noticed the spot on the beak just last night when I removed them from the big cage and put them in a hospital cage so I can treat them and cut their nails. These are the first finches that I have ever owned, so I am not sure what is good or bad or what! I am not a happy camper, but I will tell you that Joanne from Lady Gouldian Finch.com has been extremely helpful!

Thinking the same thing Stuart....looks to me like a jab on the beak or injury.

Her legs don't have any crusty stuff at all. They look healthy

romien that's good mate, with scaly mite it doesn't necessarily have to be on their feet as quite often it can be just around the face and beak,

However apon closer inspection of yer pic of the twinspot I do seriously think it's been inflicted by anothe bird attack and has damaged the top of it's upper manibill,

I really wouldn't like to say how well this will heel over, it probably doesn't effect the bird in general but the problem is that it could be open to infection,

In truth I'd mention it to an avian vet to seek their advice, they may possibly ask you to bring the bird in to them

Thank you Stuart. I don't have an avian vet in my area, so I have to rely on other sources. If it is a wound, what could I put on it to keep it from getting infected? I have some vetericyn

I use neosporin, but you would have to be extremely careful not to block the nostrils.

Yes mate the vetericyn should be ok if applied to the wound,

I personally still have a reliable source of a very old fashioned medicine known as witch hazel,

I've been using this for many years when it's needed and is very affective and heels wounds quickly,
