Gouldian Finch Egg Laying

Post by mizzi » Sun Aug 14, 2016 10:28 am

Hi I have a pair of gouldian finches and this is the first time that I am trying to breed the birds. The first egg was laid the 1st of August and continued 1 egg a day till it reached a total of 5 eggs. They started incubating the eggs normally but yesterday on the 13th of August I found out that the hen laid another egg and so did today. Is it normal that it leaves a long gap till it lays all eggs or she's starting another clutch?
Thanks

mizzi To me, it sounds like she is starting another clutch, with that big a gap. Can you candle the eggs?

Welcome to the forum! There's lots of good reading at www.finchinfo.com, where you will find many articles on finch care. If you put your general location in your profile, it makes it easier to answer locale-specific questions later on.

Thanks for the reply, that's what I thought. Yes I have candled the eggs 4 of them seem good. What do you think will happen if the first eggs hatch. Will they continue to incubate the second clutch? Or throw them out of nest?
