What are they?

Post by Supposedly crazy » Sat Aug 20, 2016 3:44 pm

I was at the pet store last month, and I remember seeing these two tiny finches being housed with zebras and cordon bleus. I don't think they were juveniles, having bright feathers and all.
I didn't have time to find the name of the finch on the poorly organized info card.(was being dragged across the store by a four year old )I was thinking about it last night, and started scouring the internet, but I can't seem to find any information on them. Doesn't help that I can hardly remember what they looked like, I know they had bright cheek patches, and I believe that their bodies were blue. But I'm sure that they weren't cordon bleus, these were much smaller. They were dwarfed by the zebras

Supposedly crazy hi mate, firstly welcome to the forum :D

yer question about the mysterious birds has somewhat puzzled me at the moment,

I can only put the birds down to red cheeked cordon bleus,

Try to google image African and Asian finches and you may eventually find em :-BD

As Stuart has said, the only bird that comes to mind that has a blue body and bright cheek patches is the Red-cheeked Cordon Bleu. Some photos of them are here:

RCCB's are slimmer than the BCCB's and so may appear smaller. However, you said they were housed with Cordon Bleus. Male CBs will fight if there are hens present.

Welcome to the forum! There's lots of good reading at www.finchinfo.com, where you will find many articles on finch care. If you put your general location in your profile, it makes it easier to answer locale-specific questions later on.

They were more grey than blue.
And I think their cheek patches were a dark yellow.

This is really bugging me. Especially since I usually have a good memory.

They might have been orange cheeked wax bills.
But im not sure....
Oh well, I'd probably never buy something that small anyway.
Way too fragile.

Arh....yes mate that would make sence if you say they were more greyish in colour,

To be onest I specifically specialise in these birds myself along with other waxbills and once acclimatised they become quite easy to cater for and are reasonably hardy :-BD

It is pretty amazing how tiny some of these birds are but don't let their size fool you. :) I have bronze mannikins and they are so little (smaller than a society finch) but they are feisty.

I was reading up on society finches last night, and saw a video of 17 societies piled in a wicker nest. One of the cutest things I've ever seen.
Their probably what I'll end up getting, I like the fact that they are so domesticated.
Makes me feel a little less guilty about keeping them in a cage most of the time.
I do love zebras, but I'm the only one in my family who doesn't find their constant beep beeps annoying. I think it's adorable, in fact my last zebra pair went by the names, Beep, and Peep (I was 11 don't judge lol)

Hi mate, society finches are a very good choice of beginners type of bird , very easy to keep, feed and breed, their not noisy and are not particularly an expensive bird to buy.

They also have many different colour variations,

Have a little ask about on the forum and I'm sure that someone will possibly help out with birds or maybe some various contacts near to you :-BD

Incidentally you need to put yer location on your profile so other members can respond and help a little easier by knowing roughly where you are

Nice, I like easy pets, less worry.
Though I'm not really a beginner, I've been successfully taming "wild" hookbills for quite some time. I even hand tamed a pair of fearful lovebirds (only because people said it was impossible though  )
I just decided to get back into the bird hobby with soft bills. On account of the fact that as a musician, I strongly value my fingers. Believe me it's not fun to be the target of a hormonal parrot.
So yeah I'm gonna stick with the ones that can't take your fingers off.

None at the moment,my living quarters are not bird friendly (my rooms an attic).
But when we move next year I plan on getting some feathered friends.
I do have a ferret but everyone but me seems to either dislike him or are allergic.
