Question on Gouldian
Hi All,
I have a new pair of gouldians that hatched only 1 chick on their first clutch and were doing fine in feeding and brooding the only chick. The chick hatched on 24th August and since yesterday everything was fine until the climate changed due to a low pressure system.
The female has been sick and has her dropping does not have any solid content what so ever. Her dropping are fully watery with no solid content.I gave her some electrolyte for energy and treated with antibiotics. But she is still fluffed up and sick.
She stopped brooding the chick since yesterday 28th August. While my male continues to feed the chick and take care of the feeding part. But he is not doing the brooding part(Which is anyways not his responsibility).
Now the question is i have the chick in wooden next box with a heat lamp next to it. My temperature here is around 32 Celsius and even at night it does not drop below 27. Should i leave the chick in the next and let the male take care of him?
My female did not respond to the antibiotics. So i am treating her with Ronivet since today. She seems to be a bit (flys a bit and eats and drinks), but still fluffed up and sitting near the heat bulb. She is also exhibiting symptoms of twirling .
Any suggestion on what could help both the chick and mom?

Re: Question on Gouldian
the dropping color what are they, hen thin, wet vent? Belly lumpy, concave, swollen, intestines loopy, liver dark?
Do you have tri sulfa also...it can be mixed safely with the ronivet... mix the two powders together give for 10 to 14 days. Ronivet will get protozoa, pararasites...not mites. Tri sulfa will get cocci and bacteria.
Problem using random antibiotics is most are bacteria specific... some can actually make the issue worse and should not be given without medistatin since they can bring up yeasts.... Tri sulfa is very safe, easy on the gut but takes a couple of days longer until you see results. Both are very safe to use on young. Often since tri sulfa takes a little longer/slower to work the days given needs to be extended. Which have you tried?
You may want to treat the father which will intern treat the baby. Do not use baytril on young.

Your topic is showing up in the new post list when I log on, so I don't know why it didn't do so for you. It will only show up in that list once, and then not again till someone posts a reply.
I do not give much advice on illness because I am not qualified, I am not a vet. No one can truly diagnose over the internet, any more than a vet will give a diagnosis over the phone. Watery droppings can be caused by many issues. Since your hen did not respond to whatever you gave her, it may have been the wrong antibiotic. This is why treating with antibiotics without knowing what you are treating can cause more problems. Do you have access to a vet?
If the male is feeding the baby, then you have two choices. Leave the baby in the nest and hope the male continues to feed it, or pull the baby and hand feed it. If you have a heat lamp on the nest box, make sure it is not getting too warm in there for the baby.

Re: Question on Gouldian
A vet can do a fecal for you. Also your hen may or may not have a bacterial issue.... it could be protozoa, parastic in nature ex: cocci, you would need an anti-parasitic. Sometimes you will get yeast and fungals and bacteria infections as a secondary. Parasites (not mites) and protozoa can all be passed to other birds including mates and young.

Re: Question on Gouldian
Thanks Cindy and Sally. To answer your question on the dropping color it is exactly the color of water (Plan liquid with no solid particle or color and looks almost like water). I have treated her with Paraxin(Antobotics) and ronivet for 2 days.
Not much has changed since then she is still fluffed up , wings dropping and sleeping.
I have worm out gel from vetafarm that i plan to try starting tomorrow. Hope that works .I don't have tri sulfa with me but i hope the worm out gel would be a good alternate.
I am treating both the male and female with ronivet. I plan to use wormout gel for both the parent , but i hope it does not cause any damage to chick.
So far my male has been a excellent father brooding for short time , feeding and keeping the chick safe.
I understood now why the post did not show up on the new post list thanks sally for the explanation.
I hope they all survive.

Re: Question on Gouldian
plain water no feces means her GI tract is not working well, not absorbing food. Hard to say exactly what is going on could be that a parasite such as cocci has gotten into the walls of gut.... any blood?
What strength is your Ronivet?

Re: Question on Gouldian
Hi Cindy,
I haven't seen the crop . But she is not thin and she is continuing to eat and drink water.
Any suggestion on worm out gel will that be a good substitute?
Her vent is wet , tucks her head for heat even though their is light and he breathing is a bot heavy at times.
