Pellet dye can leach into the fece, correct?

Post by Stinch » Sun Sep 04, 2016 4:24 pm

Just look at this poop. This was a one time thing, but look at that poop.

Since it was just a one time thing, I am guessing this has to do with them trying the green and blue pellets in their seed mix. I posted it here just to make sure if that poop seems ok with you guys, normal finch poop are like those other poops right? RIGHT? (Someone post their finch poops if they can so I can compare, I know this sounds a bit weird but I want to see their feces) I'm going to the dentist next Thursday and I'll see if I can go to the bird market to buy dye-less, decent quality pellet brand/a good finch mix in bulk at the bird market.

Colored pellets can definitely affect the poop. I once had to use some seed that had pellets in it, and I thought at first that I was seeing blood in the cage, then I realized it was just red poop from the dye. This is also why you never want to put seed with colored pellets in it in the bottom of a show cage--it can get on the feathers and make red/green/blue blotches on the bird. Especially unattractive on a white or light colored bird.

other than the color green, some of the droppings look off, are you seeing and seed in the feces part of the dropping, a lot of white also, the feces portion is stringy and dark

What brand pellets are you using?

If you want to get away from colored pellets try Roudybush Nibles siize or Lafeber's for finches.

At the moment I am using a seed mix I get at the supermarket, I prefer to buy seed mixes/pellets in bulk at the bird market and pet store when I can. I am very surprised that even the gouldians are eating them (seeing where I bought my goulds from), but that's not a suprise anymore ever since I moved them in with my societies. The societies are making miracles happen ever since the gouldians now live with them. (The gouldians are bathing in water bowls, they're eating a variety of different foods and they're more active now)

The droppings look off they should be formed, this is a chart to go by.

Do you see undigested seed in the darker thin strands.... lot of puffy popcorn white droppings....

No seed has been seen inside the droppings yet, just being spread around the droppings by the bird's table manners. (Will take note if bits of undigested food is found in the droppings) What do puffy popcorn and dark thin feces mean? (You could tell each bird apart from the shape and color of the poop if you knew which one made the poop)

Magnificent BirdMan

One of my societies has a preference for green dyed oats. He soaks them in the bath and moistens them, his face is always green and so it his poop. Its adorable.

If one or two birds have parasites they are sharing it with the others via water, bath water, food... dark blackish dropping means there is likely bleeding higher up in the GI tract. Cocci and internal parasites, bacteria can get into the lining of the gut.

Do your societies hold the oat groats down on the perch with their foot and snap pieces off with their beak?

Gotta love green and seed soup water!!

Hahaha! He always stains the bath water green with oats bits. The rest of the societies are like "ewwwwww, really??" :YMSICK: He's my only society that does this. Which is why I chose a seed blend with oats. I gotta fund his "habit" ;)

This is the reason that I do not use Zupreem fruit flavored pellets.
With colored poop, makes it more difficult to detect health problems, which is already difficult because of how well they hide their illness.

Pretty Bird colored pellets for finches is worse, the dye is darker. The red that is passed is dark, kind of scares you into thinking it was blood. Natural colored pellets are better. Zupreem I noticed, the colors of the pellets are not as dark as they use to be, not as bad.
