Gouldian question
OK I rescued this pair almost two weeks ago.I know the red head is a male he sings the other one hasn't,the more I look at them together there color looks the same was told they were a male and female ???? What does anyone out there think?I want another pair but not sure what I have here.Do the males have the red beak and females a faint black all the time or just during breeding season? Here are a few pictures.

Re: Gouldian question
Pictures are not the best but it does look like you have a pair.
The male looks to be a RedHead.LilacBreast.Green (RH.LB.Green)
and your hen looks like a BlackHead.PurpleBreast.Green (BH.PB.Green)
The hen once fully mature will have a red tipped beak except for when she is in breeding mode. In breeding mode the beak will be almost all black. Looks like she is either going into breeding mode or out of.
Very nice birds!
best of luck

Re: Gouldian question
The male I believe is a LB and not PB. LB males are the same color as a PB hen but richer in color, if that makes sense. RH and BH have red tipped beaks where YH's will have a yellow tipped beak.

Re: Gouldian question
Your very welcome.
Other signs of being a hen is short tail wires and a lighter yellow belly. There will also be much less blue circling the head color.
Of course of it sings is a male, lay's eggs a hen.

Re: Gouldian question
debbie276 I would say her yellow seems to br lighter if you look past her belly area, she does seem to have a shady black beak,I have to look at tail feathers tomorrow there sleeping right now .really don'the think they are a pair (meaning like one another)When I first caught them and cut there nails the male band had the #14 the female# 12 wouldn't that be the year they were born, the female really ignores him and he sings but will not have anything to do with her, they do not groom one another, will sleep on same perch but not close together,I guess he doesn't like older women

Re: Gouldian question
Those numbers can mean many things, everyone bands differently. They could even be siblings if the breeder is just banding numbers to keep track of how many have hatched.
Gouldians are not snuggly like say society's. Very rare for them to groom each other too. They are much more secretive even mating in their nestbox.
