New Seagreen Parrot Finches

Post by slwatson » Tue Sep 13, 2016 10:09 am

The first clutched raised by my seagreen pair produced three babies...they're doing great!

Thanks Babs! The original hen impaled herself on one of those small bungee cords I had forgotten to remove from the cage. I was devastated, but my friend was able to get me another hen. She has issues with one of the legs from an injury, but she is a fantastic mom!

Congratulations on the babies they look wonderful.
Did you breed them in a cage or an aviary? what did you do to get them to breed? I just rescued a few parrot finches both normal and sea green and I'm hoping to breed them this next year, but i don't know a whole lot about them and what i need to do to get them to breed.

Thank you!

I use a single flight for each pair. This pair prefers a plastic nest box with the opening in the front. I just give them lots of egg food with an insect mix added, good seed, fresh veggies, and a mineral mix. I provide coconut fiber for the nesting material. The sea green male has no problem letting his hen know when he's ready to mate...which seems to be often. I actually have to watch him to make sure he doesn't chase her too much! They're both wonderful parents!

I have a red throat pair that hasn't had much luck. They prefer a wicker nest, and I provided them with the same things I give my sea greens. Their first clutch was fantastic...but they haven't been successful since. The male seems to want to over stuff the nest. The hen will lay eggs, he'll cover it with material, she'll lay more eggs, and it repeats. I haven't been able to figure out what to do to get them to have another good clutch.

I would suggest offering a couple different types of nests at different levels in the cage. They'll usually pick the one they like best. Some people offer live meal worms when their parrot finches are breeding...I haven't done this with my sea greens. I just add a good insect mix in with the egg food and that seems to be all they need.

Awesome slwatson, Thanks for the input i will definitely try and do that. I haven't put in any nest boxes yet cause i am still trying to get them back to health. it seems as though i have a dominate male who is always singing but he doesn't really seem to be singing to any other finch in particular and doesn't chase any of the others around, so I'm having a hard time figuring out with of the other ones are females and males. I'm hoping that in the next month or so i can start putting in nest boxes and try to see if any of them try to air off.
