SURGERY A SUCCESS!

Nicolas had his tumor removed earlier today, and when I left him he was alert but still groggy from the anesthesia and pain medication. Thanks to all for the prayers and positive thoughts -- they certainly seem to have helped! :) The vet said he was able to remove 95 percent of the tumor (a small amount was too deeply embedded into the wing for it to be safely removed), and he will submit it to a lab to determine whether it's malignant.

Depending on what type of tumor it is, it may or may not grow back. But that could happen whether it is benign or malignant. If it is malignant, we will face a tough choice:

(1) Just let nature take its course, and deal with the tumor regrowth when it returns -- likely meaning he would have to be put down then, or

(2) Amputate the wing to prevent the tumor from growing back again and possibly spreading cancer to other parts of his body.

We are fairly certain we would never want to subject him to a wing amputation. As strong and lively as he is, I just can't imagine that he would have any real quality of life left without the ability to fly. Has anyone on the forum ever had a bird with only one wing? If so, how did it fare? Did they ever adjust to being flightless and seem happy again at some point?

I'm so very happy for you and Nicolas's surgery success!!
Never had a bird that was missing a wing but I'm pretty sure they will do as well as the ones that are missing feet and legs. Will let someone with more experience to that circumstance chime in here.
Just wanted to say YAHOO!!

Excellent, nice one Dave,

Hopefully with a bit of luck yer Gouldian will now be ok,

I suppose in a worst case sinario if a wing had to be amputated it wouldn't be the end of the world for the bird as I should think it would probably still survive and feed and water itself but as you rightly say that in reality what kind of quality of life would the bird have

very tough decision, I know what I'd personally do but I couldn't possibly say out loud if you get me jist

HOME AGAIN!

We picked up Nicolas from the vet on Monday, and he definitely seems very glad finally to be home again. We barely had returned home before the vet called with the lab results that had just arrived — the tumor they removed from Nicolas’ wing was benign! :D

The vet wasn’t certain whether it may return — but there’s at least a decent chance it will not. So after a harrowing 11 days — and a small fortune in vet bills later — he seems to be mostly in the clear. He has a slight weakness on that side when flying, is slightly more subdued than usual, and has a large scab and a few missing feathers at the tumor site...so his recovery continues. But he is behaving almost normally again — singing to us, bathing, eating, and even turning a couple of the acrobatic flips he has always enjoyed doing to "show off" for us whenever he sees us.

Monday was his last day on Tramadol, but he still has a week of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory meds to go. The vet expects his plumage eventually to grow back and cover the scarred area, but it may take up to a year to appear normal again. But we don't even care anymore about his appearance — we're just relieved he is still with us, and he seems to be as happy about it as we are!

Many thanks to all again for the advice, positive thoughts and vibes you sent his way....they certainly seem to have helped!

That is fantastic news, so glad that he's ok :D

The chances are that his wing will heal over in due time and eventually grow new feathers back when he moults :-BD

He looks wonderful for all that he went through. So happy the tumor was benign, less worry for you. It sounds like he is making a remarkable recovery.
