News from Bunbury

Post by Dramoth » Sun Oct 09, 2016 11:14 pm

Well... our Zebs are at it already... We have approx 8 eggs in 2 nests so far... Zebs being Zebs.

And our male and one of the females in our painted firetails aviary are nesting. The male was calling last night and this morning when I checked, I found our first firetail egg.

And in a little bit, I think I might go and grab the pair of firetails (95AUD for the pair) and a pair of Orange Brested waxtails from the pet store.

And when I get back, I might make up some more nest boxes.

Nothing from the waxtails, they are building their nest I think... but there are 3 eggs from the firetails.

And I have just returned from another epic road trip... picking up 3 new kids. A breeding pair of African Firefinches and a juvenile Painted Firetail cock bird.

Aren't the firefinches absolutely beautiful?
Our new African Firefinches
Our new African Firefinches
And our new Painted Firetail cockbird... might be a while before he hooks up with one of the two available females in the aviary.
And our new male firetail.
And our new male firetail.

Thanks Elana,

It's been a bit of a journey getting things started again. We have a few Zebs (6 pairs) and I am starting to get a few exotics :) The new kids I got today are absolutely gorgeous :D

Finally... I got my final painted firetail cock bird.

One of the breeders who deals with the pet store here in Bunbury brought a bunch of birds down to sell... so many birds.

But damn are they expensive :( I suppose that I have been somewhat spoilt by dealing directly with breeders lately and paying breeder prices that paying for a single bird from the store shocked me.

$50AUD for the single cock bird... when I brought all 5 of the other firetails for $100AUD. I know that the pet store is only paying about $20 per bird. Which kind of sucks.

But... finally, I have my 3 pairs of firetails :D

That's awesome! I'd love to see pics of your whole setup (aviaries) and see how the homeland of the finches does it!

We've just got pretty average aviaries really. I am looking at a house to buy over in Victoria which has a massive backyard. If I can get it, I'll be going nuts building some modular flight aviaries and a massive big flight aviary with a water feature in there.

It's just going to be a matter of getting the house first! We are stuck here at least until the beginning of September next year and then we'll have to take stock on things.
