Is my finch molting or are his feathers plucked

Post by StodOne » Mon Oct 17, 2016 8:09 pm

I have noticed that my society finch is starting to loose some feathers on the breast and neck area and behind the head , not sure if he is being pecked , havent noticed any fights going on in the cage .
His skin is something betwen , pink/red/orange weird color , i did catch him and inspected but it is hard to take the picture , I just cant position him that way.
Anyways I have noticed a few white I believe they are new feathers , but only a few maybe 3 or 4 , his skin is smooth but I am afraid it is some kind of skin disease not sure .
I have noticed that the other society is grooming him a lot , i am wondering if he isnt plucking his feathers for the nest , I dont have much nest material , I need to buy it .
This is the best I could do , I couldnt even take the photo of him in my hand as I couldnt hold him with one hand .

It is hard to know for sure, but often when it is feathers missing around the head and/or neck, that is plucking, and often it is because the birds want some nesting material. You mentioned that you don't have much right now, that may be the cause of the plucking.

Sally That sneaky white one , he acts like he is preening him but in reality he is just trying to get to the flufy stuff #-o , come to think of it he does put anything inside the nest , from whole pheasant feathers to that long stick from millet seeds. I will make sure I get the nesting material as soon as possible , but what do you recomend to use ?
