So sorry.
I know the feeling - I've never had one pet get another, but I've done it myself. It's been a couple of years now since I accidentally killed my favorite canary, Steve, and I still feel heartbroken about it. She had gotten into the hallway and in her confusion there, I guess she was resting on the floor. Well I didn't know she was there, it was evening and she was the same color as the carpet, I came along... and she didn't get out of the way.

At the time, none of my birds normally went to the floor, so I didn't even think to look. Now I have the cockatiels, budgies, dove who all love to forage on the ground and I am much more attentive to know where they're at.

Yes, I remember Steve, and that awfull accident....

We all lose birds now and again, to illness, old age, stress, and mishaps that we have no control over (it's the cruel reality of bird keeping, and of life in general). However when it's something that could have been so easily prevented, I find that it's a lot harder to deal with, sigh...

Kenzie, was such a happy little fella, so funny, and vibrant and filled with the joy of life. It was just horrible to see this bright little light extinguished so suddenly in what amounted to a few seconds.

Don't beat yourself up over it. My Steve, and your Kenzie, both surely had better, happier lives than so many other pet birds ever get, even if they were both over way too early. Less quantity, but surely much more quality than the bird who sits in a soiled cage in some spare room for years on a diet just sufficient to keep it alive - and unfortunately, I have seen way too many birds spend years in that state.

You're right of course, but guilt (as useless and counter productive as it is) is a difficult emotion to live down.

I no longer beat myself up over it, but the sadness is still there .

Hi Elana. Very sorry to hear about Kenzie. These things happen so quickly! I recently lost my parrot for 2 days. It happened in the blink of an eye. Thanks to the power of Facebook I got him back. I don't know who was happier about it him or me. LOL.
Your new puppy is adorable! As much as I love all my birds for me there is no pet that can compare to a dog.

As the Mom of now three members of the Canine Nation, I know what you mean, lol. I actually learned how to walk, hanging on to the family dog (who was my best friend for the first 9 years of my life).

I was very angry with our Katy girl, but it was more my fault than hers. She just reacted out of instinct and jealousy. As for me, I simply wasn't using common sense that day, and poor little Kenzie paid for it with his life .

lovezebs, so sorry to hear about your little guy. So devastating to have one die in your hands. :'( My dog sticks her nose up to the cages (calmly) and the birds don't even flinch but if I have to pull one out the cage for any reason, her ears go up and she licks her chops. She would grab one in a heartbeat if given the chance.

Our little Katy was jealous of Kenzie from the begining. She's ok with the birds in the flights, but one that was handled and mostly out of the cage, was a different story.

lovezebs, I had one jump out of the cage today while I was cleaning. Normally, the dog is not out there with me when I'm cleaning cages just for this reason. I put her in the house and got the little guy (society) back in his cage. Thought of you as soon as it happened.

I had an Australian Shepard/Pit Bull mix years ago and she would let the cockatiel "preen" her. The tiel was very bonded to her. When someone knocked at the door, the dog barked and the bird barked. The dog I have now is a border collie mix. I tell her that she can't hurt momma's birds but she would snatch one up in a heartbeat if she could. My heart goes out to you. It's devastating to lose a hand tamed baby.

LOL! Absolutely love the story of the Tiel preening the dog, and both dog and bird barking at the door together....

Glad that you managed to capture your little escapee without too much trouble. I've had some adventures in that department that are somewhere on the Forum.
