Heat wave

Its been hot here in Sydney 40+ degrees!!!

Does anyone know how to combat extreme heat with finches, I know plenty of water/shade, place to bath etc but on the days when its over bearing what are some ideas that you can do??? using ice safe for example? sprinkler? let me know your ideas?

Maybe fill some milk jug with water and freeze might cool the area a little. If you have outside aviary's you might put a misting system in the top of the aviary put on timer to give them a shower every hour or so,they would love it .Good luck

I can't imagine the weather down there.. Sorry..

I know in Las Vegas they have some water mist sprayers that do help with people to cool down. They spray a fine mist of water in the air and they run all the time during the heat in Summer. I'd think it would be good for birds too.

B Camp already suggested that and he knows a lot more than I do..

Can you put a sprinkler/misting nozzle on top of your aviary connected to a water hose and run it from there? Oh.. just read that B Camp already suggested the same thing. Sorry..

If you only have Ice availablel (alot of it), try putting a fan on it to act like an air conditioner blowing into the aviary. Humidity will help, so if you can put a water mist with it too, it should help reduce the temp. Guess It all depends on your aviary.

Highly recommend going to a home improvement store and picking up a misting attachment for a hose. Make sure to keep the hose in the shade, this is important or you will be misting hot water.

I would say put the mister in a corner of the cage and let it run all day during the heat. I know this is what they do in theme parks in the states. They have misting stations for the hot days. IT really can keep an area cool because the downward motion of the water mist pulls the heat down and provides a current of air moving into and out of that spot. If its in the shade, you can expect to have a nice cool misty spot for the birds to enjoy and even use as a bath.

putting shadecloth above the aviary will help, I use 90% shade for mine.
the mist sprays is another that I use. have some 19mm polypipe fixed into the roof of the aviary with mist sprays at different intervals. to avoid the problem mentioned by finch fry I have a bleed tap in the line which I open and use to drain off any heated water. once the water has cooled I switch taps and the water is directed to the sprays. on days over 40c this is put on a timer and comes on for 15 minutes every hour.

weather has gone from extreme hot to constant rain.. damn global warming!!!
