I'm baaack!!
So I picked out 2 javas, one pied and one normal gray. The white one which I really wanted as well, had already been sold. The breeder is pretty sure the pied is a male, but is not 100% sure that the normal is a female. They are quite young, about 5 months old. He said that if the normal turns out to be a male, the two males should be fine together, or I can bring it back and get a female instead.
Having some trouble trying to upload photos, but hope to have them up shortly.

Re: More Javas!
Nerine - Congratulations!!! I am so happy for you!
And I am happy you chose the pied one, that one would have been my first choice as well. He is even more beautiful in the close-up pictures you took. What a wonderful early Christmas present. Enjoy them!

Nerine - I just called my husband in to show him your birds and he loves them, too. He said if they were his, he would call them Kraka and Toa

Hah hah haah....
I knew you wouldn't be coming home empty handed.
They are BEAUTIFUL!!!
I agree that the pied, looks like a boy.
As to the normal.... I don't know. It looks sort of dainty like a girl, but then what do I know, lol.
Happy for you.

Re: More Javas!
Come to think of it, I may have never seen pieds for sale here.
Lots of pure normals (mostly wild-caught) and pure whites, fawns and silvers are also readily available, but somehow no pieds.
Not that I miss them, but it's strange.
Yesterday I caught all birds in my birdroom for nail clipping and cleaning up the place.
This was an opportunity to take a close look at my 2 Javas that I bought in juvenile color but they are now fully colored. I am not sure they are a pair - might need to buy more!

w.l. - Come on, admit it, you caught the Java fever, too.
It's amazing how this 'virus' is contagious over the internet.

Nerine, they are beautiful! Congratulations!
I love the pied one too! Looks like the pied is a male. hmmm....the jury is still out for me on the little gray one since it's young. Great choices.

I'm thinking of going with your husband's suggestion.....I'm terrible at naming birds; my first zebra pair I named Zebra and Finch!

Nerine - Haha. First I thought Kraka and Toa were kind of silly (as in "Krakatoa East of Java" the movie from the late 60s), but it's beginning to grow on me. I'm also terrible at naming birds. In fact most of mine don't have names.

I've noticed the two of them 'beak wrestling' -don't know what else to call it-so, for me too, the jury is still out on the normal's gender. The normal seems to be more aggressive and vocal than the pied as well.
I jumped at the chance of getting 1 or 2 javas, because they are only available at the local bird store for $30/normal and $40/all other mutations (plus tax). Getting the pied for just $20 was a steal! Otherwise, I would have to drive to Toronto to get javas.

Re: More Javas!
Nerine, they have a soft song but, from my experience, only the male sings. The female chews him out a lot but it doesn't resemble "singing". She sounds pissed and she is the boss of him. If she has eggs and wants out of the nest for a break, she fusses at him and he obeys. If she wants him out of the nest so she can get back in, she fusses at him and he obeys. If she's in the nest and he's not sitting close enough, she fusses at him and he obeys. She's more vocal but he is the one with the pretty, soft song.
I love the names! My male is Java the Hut. Female is Princess Leila. The chick is Vader. Most of my birds don't have names but the Javas do.
