Just a question. What would happen if you bred a female chocolate with a Black Brown cock?
I'm thinking about color as well as temperment?
I'm really drooling over both.

That picture of the Black-brown with the reddish tinge makes me want to cry tears of joy, it is soooo pretty!
The one on the close to the last picture 2nd to the left? On my!
Sigh, I just LOVE this species. I'm smitten, somebody smack me. isobea can smack me first , she's up for it (giggle).
(j/j)
I wanna get a van and just swoop up that whole flock. Simply gorgeous!
I can see it now. "I sell gouldians to pay for my society habit".
Ohhh this could end up that way.

Nice birds!
I particularly like the one with white ring on left leg, the last bird on the 2nd lot of photos. Good to see some quality societirs here.

I'd also have trouble telling apart especially the poorer quality black-browns and the nicer chocolate selves.
Btw, the lighter coloured birds on the pics are not to my taste, only the darker ones with strong scaling.
And of course I still prefer my B&W Mannikins - knowing it's comparing apples and oranges.

So what about the B&W Mannikins available at $35 each - birds don't get darker tsn those glossy black beauties!
Not your thing either?
Then it looks like I have an unusual taste!

I spent the day browsing those B & W Manakins. Like candy I have to pick and choose my delights, but (again the pattern junkie), I LOVE the stripes under their wings!
Its almost the ONLY finch they had on sale that I wanted! YES! they are incredibly beautiful.....one......flight......at ......a time. haha!
I just talked Bill into another 6 foot flight, in addition to my two other 6 foot cages, and my 30x33x18 inch 3 breeding flights for each pair of the gouldians. My javas have another 30x33x18 inch as well
My parrot is like "you serious??"
I'm about to go wall-to-wall in cage space here in... in addition to working full time, y'all are trying to kill me.
I have NO idea why I love the dark societies SOOOO much. lovezebs Has amazing specimans as well. Maybe not show, but they are gorgeous.

Those mannikins can be nasty to other birds, however if you need to mix them, the Javas should be suitable companions with their much bigger size and formidable bills.
I'd also be curious to see hybrids of B&W Mannikins and societies.
Wonder if they would make societies blacker?

Grrr dont get me on the breeding train, I will get OBESSESSED,saving eggs in incubators, playing around with OCD in their nest space.
Ive had babies in incubators inside eggs, whilst babies in a brooder, whilst babies in weaning cages. No sleep, while working a full hour hour week, and over indulging . You're wicked. ahahaha
It gets really bad. I am completely calm compared to last season.
The only time my societys fly with my gouldians, is off-season. in the 6 foot flights. They are however checked for protozoa in advance.
Stop tempting me !!! I do handraise if needed from the incubator.
This is pay-back yes?

Why incubator and hand-raising when you keep societies?
Surely they raise their own chicks, plus any Gouldians if need be?

So have you figured out what type of societies your shop has for sale?
My guess would be that none of those discussed here...

I'm not completely sure; it's been around month since I went there and I don't remember much except that there were a pile of light pied societies and one dark one sitting nearby. Maybe it wasn't even a society finch, but some sort of wild munia? I'm starting to think I should have taken a photo...

That is actually a light blue band. That bird came in behind it's brother who won the show last year, but the judge said if it had a couple more weeks to feather out, he would have won. He is on a clutch of eggs right now.w.l. wrote: Nice birds!
